“That was tough day at the office.
“This time last night we felt we were in quite a decent position, 70-3. It was a big wicket losing Gary (Ballance) last night. This morning, they bowled beautifully.
“They were good conditions to bowl in, and we lost a couple of quick ones and just couldn’t stop it.
“We’re up against it now. The only thing you could say is that generally, over the course of the summer, we’ve batted better in our second innings. Hopefully when we get our chance, we can bat better.
“But, this morning, sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opposition. They were very skilful, bowled in the right areas and caught well. It was very difficult to stop it.
“I hope the pitch flattens out and it’s not going to spin and seam as much. The ball got a bit softer today. When the lights come on and it’s gloomy, it spins and seams a lot. When the sun’s out, it gets a bit flatter.
“Hopefully it’s a nice, crackin’ day in Taunton tomorrow and we can bat well.
“(Fraine and Coad) Frainey will hopefully bat at some stage, but he won’t be opening because he hasn’t been out in the field. Coady’s struggling a bit. We’ll see where he’s at.”

Hampshire v Surrey
Hampshire 149 & 150-3, Surrey 163. An unbeaten 54, made off just 37 balls, by James Vince put Hampshire in a strong position, before stopped play. Felix Organ made his third half-century of the season after Surrey had earlier taken a first innings lead of 14. Keith Barker finished with 4 for 38.
Nottinghamshire v Kent
Kent 304, Nottinghamshire 124. Notts were rolled over for 124 in 53.1 overs with veteran Darren Stevens finishing with 5 for 39. Kent elected not to enforce the follow on and now have an overall lead of 275. Stevens, 43, took his 500th first-class wicket during a post-lunch spell of 4 for 13 in 5.1 overs and completed the 24th five-for of his career.
Somerset v Yorkshire
Somerset 199 & 199-5, Yorkshire 103.*
Second in the table Somerset are batting third-placed Yorkshire out of title contention after earlier taking a first innings lead of 90 when Yorkshire lost their last seven wickets for 39 this morning. On a pitch taking spin, Kesh Maharaj picked up two more wickets but Tom Abell (62), James Hildreth (58) and Tom Banton (43) have put Somerset in a strong position with a lead of 291.
Warwickshire v Essex
Warwickshire 468 for 7. Leaders Essex toiled in the sunshine as Matt Lamb’s unbeaten 173 powered Warwickshire into a strong position. After adding 150 in 49 overs for the fourth wicket with Sam Hain (82), Lamb found a resolute lower-order partner in Henry Brookes who made 46 and helped add 105 in 34 overs for the seventh wicket.
Division Two
Gloucestershire v Sussex
Gloucestershire 200, Sussex 198 for 4. The second day has been interrupted by bad light, but Sussex continue to make steady progress. Phil Salt made 64 and Luke Wells 42 in a game between two of the promotion contenders.
Lancashire v Derbyshire
Derbyshire 244, Lancashire 136 for 2. Josh Bohannon has made an unbeaten 69 to put the leaders in a strong position after the morning session was lost to rain.
Leicestershire v Northamptonshire
Leicestershire 308 Northants 201-4. An unbeaten 72 by Rob Keogh has kept promotion-chasing Northants in contention at Grace Road. Earlier, George Rhodes made a career-best 61 on his Leicestershire debut.
Middlesex v Durham
Durham 147 & 94 for 4, Middlesex 143. A game vital to both sides in the promotion battle. Ben Raine took 5 for 26 to ensure Durham had a narrow first innings lead but after openers Alex Lees and Cameron Steel posted a half-century stand, they lost four wickets before tea and now lead by 98.
Worcestershire v Glamorgan
Worcestershire 205 & 86 for 1, Glamorgan 193. The hosts took a narrow first innings lead thanks to Charlie Morris, whose 5 for 73 was his third five-wicket haul of the season. Openers Hamish Rutherford and Daryl Mitchell then put together a half century stand in just 10.4 overs as Worcestershire reached 86-1 and an overall lead of 98.

Tea Yorkshire are under severe pressure after five sessions of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Somerset at Taunton.
The White Rose have so far endured a torrid second day of this clash after an encouraging first.
Resuming on 70-3 in reply to a first-innings 199, they were bowled out for 103.
Somerset’s second innings then reached lunch at 49-2 from 17 overs, and the hosts have since advanced to tea at 191-4 from 49, a lead of 287.
Captain Tom Abell (62 not out) and James Hildreth both posted half-centuries, sharing 117 for the third wicket to advance from 4-2.
Hildreth was the first of only two afternoon wickets to fall when he clipped Adam Lyth’s off-spin to short-leg for 58 – 121-3 in the 37th over.
Yorkshire have been hampered by the loss of new ball seamer Ben Coad through illness. He was unable to bat this morning and has not been able to bowl.
Opener Will Fraine is also off the field having sustained a knee injury in this morning’s warm-ups, but he should be fit to bat later in the game.
Keshav Maharaj then struck with the final ball of the evening when he had Tom Banton caught at slip for 43, two balls after being reverse swept for six. That ended a stand of 70 with Abell.
Abell 50 off 101 balls with 6×4s and 1×6s.

2.24pm Breakthrough! Lyth gets Hildreth caught at short-leg by Brook for 58, ending a 117-stand with Abell (43). Somerset 121-3, leading by 217.
2.12pm Hildreth has just lofted Maharaj down the ground for a straight six, moving to 56. Somerset 117-2, leading by 213. Impressive recovery from 4-2. Yorkshire desperately need to break this Hildreth – Abell alliance.
1.59pm Hildreth reaches 50 off 86 balls with 5×4s. Somerset 102-2, a lead of 198.
1.40pm Will Fraine is also off the field at Taunton with a knee injury, suffered in warm-ups. He is expected to bat later in the game. Somerset are 78-2 and lead by 174.
1.15pm Yorkshire start the afternoon with the spin of Maharaj and Lyth. Somerset are 54-2, leading by 150.
12.45pm Yorkshire have released Bilal Anjam, Karl Carver and Matthew Taylor, not offering the trio contract extensions.
Lunch Yorkshire collapsed from 86-3 to 103 all out in reply to Somerset’s 199 during the opening hour of day two at Taunton, relinquishing control of their Specsavers County Championship fixture.
The White Rose lost six wickets for 17 runs, added to the absence of Ben Coad, who was unable to bat due to illness.
Left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe claimed three of them – nightwatchman Steve Patterson bowled off an under edge as he tried to cut, Jonny Tattersall caught at second slip and Keshav Maharaj caught and bowled.
Lewis Gregory had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught at third slip before Josh Davey struck twice in an over, trapping Harry Brook lbw and getting Tim Bresnan caught at second slip.
Yorkshire started the day on 70-3 from 21 overs and were all out inside 34 when Maharaj was dismissed.
Maharaj then opened the bowling with his left-arm spin and struck in the third over when Indian Murali Vijay was lbw sweeping before Steve Davies chipped Patterson to cover in the fourth, leaving the score at 4-2 and the home lead at 100.
Since then, they have reached lunch at 49-2 from 17 overs, leading by 145. Tom Abell is unbeaten on 15 and James Hildreth 26.
12.07pm Ben Coad is not on the field due to a medical illness. He is likely to miss the remainder of the day’s play and is currently being assessed.
11.43am Patterson strikes. Davies chips him to cover, where Leaning takes the catch. 4-2.
11.39am Maharaj strikes. The seventh wicket of the morning goes, and Somerset are 4-1, leading by 100. Vijay trapped lbw sweeping.

10.31am We’re up and running at Taunton. Yorkshire have their first run of the morning as Steve Patterson edges Dom Bess to short third-man. 71-3 after 22 overs of the reply to Somerset’s 199.
Good morning from Taunton, where it is an overcast start to day two. There might actually be a touch of rain around given the ground staff have just covered the bowlers’ run-ups.
Yesterday was edged by Yorkshire, who closed on 70-3 in reply to 199 on a pitch which is turning. Keshav Maharaj returned 5-54, but there is a touch of frustration in that Somerset were 85-6.
Batting is certainly not easy out there, but it just takes one batsman to get a score and others to chip in around him and Yorkshire will be driving the game.
We are fully confident of a 10.30am start.
