“I don’t know if I’m doing anything different, but I’ve started the season as well as any I can remember.
“Getting a score in our first game and getting the confidence from playing on a nice pitch down in Hampshire was massive, and I’ve managed to build on that.
“It’s always good to score runs, but to do it when it’s helping to put the team in a good position in matches is especially pleasing.
“We started the day well by winning the first hour, which we knew would be very important, and fortunately me and Jack [Leaning] put together a decent partnership after that.
“Jack really got stuck in and batted really well. It was an important knock for us.
“We knew we had to win that first session, and that then put us into a really good position in the match. The heavy roller took the sting out of the pitch and helped us get through the first hour.
“I think we saw in the four overs Duanne bowled tonight that he’s a quality international bowler. He’s showed what he can do in this game, and we’ll be leaning on him tomorrow and over the next few months for sure.
“He’s a really nice bloke, chilled and relaxed off the field, but once he’s out in the middle he surely means business. He likes to bowl quick and likes the odd bumper, as Kent have found out.”

Essex v Nottinghamshire (Chelmsford)
Essex won by 8 wickets
Simon Harmer, with his ninth five-wicket Championship haul in just over two years, helped spin Essex to an eight-wicket victory.
The South African off-spinner finished with 6 for 60 and has taken 18 wickets in three matches this season. Sir Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 40 as Essex knocked off their target of 105.
Somerset v Surrey (Taunton)
Lewis Gregory made an unbeaten 129 as Somerset took a first innings lead of 18. Batting again, Surrey are 34 for 2.
Kent v Yorkshire (Canterbury)
Gary Ballance has continued his excellent early-season form with his third Championship hundred as Yorkshire build a substantial lead. The left-hander scored 159 with Yorkshire leading by 284 with five second-innings wickets in hand at tea.
Warwickshire v Hampshire (Edgbaston)
Dominic Sibley scored a century for the sixth successive first-class match to help Warwickshire avoid the follow on. Ollie Soames then made 62 on his Championship debut as Hampshire stretched their lead to 346 at tea.
DIVISION TWO
Glamorgan v Gloucestershire (Newport)
Following on 213 behind and with skipper Chris Cooke sidelined by an ankle injury, Glamorgan have made a better fist of things in their second innings. Nick Selman is 83 not out with the home side only 18 in arrears with nine second-innings wickets left.
Middlesex v Leicestershire (Lord’s)
After taking a first-innings lead of 81, Middlesex slumped to 114 for 8 in their second innings with Tom Taylor and Chris Wright taking three wickets each.
Worcestershire v Durham (Worcester)
Worcestershire took a first-innings lead of 117 after being bowled out for 390. In their second innings Durham are struggling on 106 for 4, still trailing by 11 runs.
Lancashire v Northamptonshire (Old Trafford)
Dane Vilas made 97 and Tom Bailey a career-best 62 before Lancashire were bowled out for 430, a first-innings lead of 215. Northants are 62 for 3 in their second innings with Richard Gleeson picking up his seventh wicket of the match when he removed Northants’ skipper Alex Wakely.
Tea Gary Ballance posted a superb 159 during another dominant session for Yorkshire as they push for a Specsavers County Championship victory over Kent at Canterbury.
Ballance’s fourth hundred in as many four-day matches has anchored Yorkshire’s commanding second-innings 370-5 from 110 overs, which amounts to a lead of 286 with four sessions remaining in the game.
Ballance fell for 159 off 291 balls in the closing stages of the afternoon when he was bowled by Daniel Bell-Drummond.
Kent have struck twice today, with impressive Jack Leaning also falling after lunch for 69, bowled by Matt Milnes. That left Yorkshire at 327-4 in the 95th over and broke a fourth-wicket stand of 188 with Ballance.
When Ballance departed having hit 25 fours, Yorkshire were 361-5 in the 108th over with a lead of 275.
Jonny Tattersall and Tim Bresnan are in the early stages of their innings on 19 and three.

Lunch Gary Ballance reached his fourth hundred in as many Specsavers County Championship matches dating back to the end of last season this morning as Yorkshire push for victory over Kent at Canterbury.
The White Rose are in control, despite conceding a first-innings lead of 86.
They have advanced their second innings from 166-3 at the start of day three to 261-3 from 78 overs at lunch, a lead of 175. Ballance has reached 103 not out.
Ballance and Jack Leaning, unbeaten on 40, have batted through the morning without alarm on a pitch which has got better for batting, taking their fourth-wicket partnership to 122.
Whilst pitch conditions have eased from day one, it is likely that Yorkshire more potent attack will still pose problems for Kent’s batsmen later today and tomorrow as they chase a second win in three matches.
Ballance reached his ton off 196 balls with 18 fours to follow Championship hundreds against Worcestershire last September and then Nottinghamshire and Hampshire last month.

Good morning from Canterbury. It’s another lovely morning.
Yorkshire enjoyed an exceptional final two sessions of day two to put themselves in healthy shape at 166-3 in their second innings, leading by 80.
The pitch seems to have slowed up a bit and the bounce got lower, but Ben Coad was saying last night that’s there still enough in it for the bowlers.
Gary Ballance will begin the day on 57 with Jack Leaning for company on 11.
