“It’s been a tough day,” he said.
“You’re always a bit unsure how these pink ball games are going to go.
“We felt last night the way the clouds came in, it got darker a bit earlier and made it tougher to bat in that evening session. Consequently, we lost a few wickets and weren’t in the position of strength we’d have liked.
“But we felt 350 from where we were was quite a good total. It was definitely something we could go out and attack with.
“We started well (with the ball). Brooksy got an early wicket. We came back after lunch and got a couple more quickly. They were 70 or 80 for three, and we were really positive and thought we could make real inroads.
“Then it just became difficult. The weather’s good, the pitch is as well, and the ball just got soft.
“You can’t shine them, it doesn’t swing or really seam.
“But they played well to be fair.
“We felt we tried everything we could. We bowled a bit of spin, rotated the seamers to try and mix it up a bit.
“But, as I say, they played well and put us under a bit of pressure. It’s not ideal.
“This evening when we took the new ball, it seemed to offer a lot more. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the breakthrough we wanted, so we’ve got to come back in the morning and work really hard to see if we can get two or three and get into the all-rounders and the bowlers to get them out for maybe level.
“It’s going to go one of two ways.
“If we start poorly, they’re going to get level maybe four or five down. Then we’re really up against it.
“But if we come out and start strongly, they’re still 100 or so behind. If we get them five down quickly, there’s no reason why we can’t have them out level or maybe even slightly behind us.”

Life for Alsop on 43 as he edges a Leaning delivery which seemed to bounce a bit more than usual and Tattersall gets a glove on it but can’t cling on. Could have easily lobbed up to Lyth at first slip as well. 199-3 now.

7.46pm All quiet from Yorkshire’s point of view, unfortunately. Hampshire are 193-3 with Adams having just reached his hundred off 182 balls with 17 fours.
7.17pm Yorkshire will get the new ball with five overs remaining, which could be a tricky time to bat. If they can strike a couple of times beforehand, they’d be in reasonable health. We currently have the best part of 29 remaining, with Hampshire at 163-3. Adams, on 86, has yet to score this evening.
Tea Report
Hampshire recovered from the loss of two early afternoon wickets to reach tea on day two at the Ageas Bowl on 153-3 after 53 overs.
Replying to Yorkshire’s first-innings 350 all out, the hosts slipped from 63-1 to 68-3, losing James Vince and Sam Northeast in the first nine balls of the session.
But opener Jimmy Adams led the fightback alongside fourth-wicket partner Tom Alsop on a sluggish pitch.
Vince was bowled by Jack Brooks through the gate for 35 in the 20th over before Steve Patterson uprooted Sam Northeast’s middle stump in the next.
Yorkshire ensured Hampshire struggled to get away by bowling tight lines immediately after the wicket, but Adams was able to break the shackles.
He reached 50 off 96 balls with nine fours and will begin the evening on 86. Alsop has 21 of an 85-run stand.
Patterson currently has figures of 1-16 from 13 overs.
6.14pm We have nine overs until tea. After those two early wickets, there has been little encouragement for Yorkshire, who bowled well afterwards and tied Adams and Alsop down. However, the second half of the afternoon has been much more productive for the hosts, who are 131-3 in the 45th replying to 350.
5.58pm Some effort from Surrey medium pacer Ryan Patel, who has taken five wickets in his first eleven balls against Somerset at Guildford. Prior to today, Patel had only taken two first-class wickets.
5.38pm Adams reaches his fifty off 96 balls with a ninth boundary. Hampshire have scored freely over the last two or three overs to move to 102-3 after 34 overs.
5.18pm Yorkshire have brought on the spin of Adam Lyth as they search for wicket number four. Hampshire 80-3 in the 28th over. Adams 31 and Alsop 3.

Lunch report
Yorkshire advanced their first innings from 315-7 to 350 all out during the opening session of day two against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
The White Rose lost Tim Bresnan and Jack Brooks to slip to 319-9, including a fifth wicket for South Africa quick Dale Steyn, before Steve Patterson and Ben Coad shared 31 to secure a fourth batting point.
Patterson hit a useful 37, including back-to-back cut boundaries off Steyn, before miscueing the other South African seamer Kyle Abbott to mid-off to wrap up the innings.
Hampshire then reached lunch at 63-1 from 19 overs of their reply, with Jack Brooks picking up the only wicket when he trapped Joe Weatherley lbw for seven in the fourth over.
Jimmy Adams and captain James Vince have since shared an unbroken 54 for the second wicket.
Adams will begin the afternoon on 21 and Vince on 35.
The final over of the ‘morning’ session is coming up as Patterson prepares to bowl to Adams.

2.15pm Yorkshire have lost their ninth wicket as Jack Brooks edges Dale Steyn to second slip to fall for one. The visitors have moved to 324-9 with Steve Patterson and Ben Coad at the crease.
2.07pm Tim Bresnan has been bowled by Fidel Edwards for 35, eight balls into the day. Yorkshire are 318-8 in the 98th over.

Surrey and Yorkshire County Cricket Clubs are teaming up to live stream the match between the two clubs at North Marine Road, Scarborough next week, using four cameras.
The ground-breaking partnership has been made possible by broadcaster Sky Sports, who own the rights to broadcast all cricket played in England, giving special permission for the one-off broadcast to go ahead.
As well as the Surrey and Yorkshire websites, the game will also be broadcast on Sky Sports Digital and the ECB website.
The production efforts will be shared between the two counties, with a special commentary team being put together for the occasion set to feature popular Surrey commentators Mark Church and Johnny Barran as well as a host of well-known names from the past, present and futures of both counties. The game will still be covered ball by ball on BBC radio, as ever.
Thus far in 2018, every Surrey CCC home game has been streamed on the club website, kiaoval.com, using two fixed cameras, one at each end of the ground. Across the 15 days of domestic cricket the ground has hosted so far, well over 2,000,000 minutes have already been watched.
Surrey CCC Chief Executive Richard Gould said: “It’s tremendously exciting to be able to work alongside Yorkshire and the ECB to put on a ‘first’ in English domestic cricket.
“The regular stream provided for all Surrey home matches is proving very popular indeed and so to be able to take it to the next level like this is fantastic, both for the county game and for Surrey fans who are unable to make it up to Scarborough.
“I would like to thank Yorkshire CCC, Sky Sports and the ECB for all their work in creating this unique partnership and very much look forward to enjoying the results at the end of this month.”

Good afternoon from the Ageas Bowl, where the sun is shining and we’re all set for day two of Yorkshire’s floodlit Championship match against Hampshire.
After a shaky start at 21-3, Yorkshire recovered to enjoy the better of the day as they closed on 315-7 with Tim Bresnan and Steve Patterson at the crease.
Gary Ballance and Harry Brook impressed with a century and 79 respectively, repelling the excellent Dale Steyn, who claimed four wickets on a slowish pitch.
If Yorkshire can bat for the lion’s share of the opening session today, they will be in excellent shape as they chase a third win from their sixth match of the season.
