“I do (love batting here). It was a pretty decent wicket, and it felt good batting out there in the middle. I think we have a decent score.
“They bowled well and in some good areas and made it tough to score, so we had to be patient. Once I got in, it was a nice paced pitch.
“When we went back out after tea, it took a bit of time to get used to the twilight. But I don’t want to make any excuses, it was a poor shot. I just got stuck in two minds.
“After tea, from around 7 onwards, it became harder than when the sun was out in the day.
“We fought back well after our start, and we finished the day very strongly.”

Tea Report
Gary Ballance posted his first hundred of the season and his third in three innings at the Ageas Bowl this afternoon.
The former Yorkshire captain has led his side’s recovery from 21-3 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against Hampshire, with the visitors reaching tea at 228-4 from 64 overs.
Ballance shared 143 for the fourth wicket either side of lunch with Harry Brook, who was the only man to fall in a dominant afternoon session.
Brook had reached 79 by the time he was trapped lbw by the excellent Dale Steyn, leaving the score at 164-4 in the 49th over.
Otherwise, Hampshire’s bowlers have struggled after the White Rose won the toss and elected to bat.
Last season, Ballance scored a century and a double century in an April draw here. Today, Brook reached his fifty off 74 balls before Ballance followed him there off 99.
Ballance then reached his hundred in the final over of the session off 171 balls and will resume on 103. Jack Leaning is 19 not out.

5.50pm A real mixed bag from Hampshire’s seamers today. Steyn has been excellent. He’s into his eleventh over and has only conceded 13, while Edwards and Abbott have been expensive, the latter more so having conceded 39 in five overs. Yorkshire 158-3 in the 47th.

Lunch Report
Gary Ballance and Harry Brook are leading the fightback for Yorkshire following the loss of three early wickets during the opening session against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
Steve Patterson won his first toss in charge of the White Rose’s Specsavers County Championship team and elected to bat, but saw his top order slip 21-3 inside 12 overs.
Alex Lees and Che Pujara fell for ducks, the latter losing his off and middle stumps to Dale Steyn, bowling with the new pink Kookaburra ball.
Adam Lyth also fell for 21, but the visitors have steadied to reach lunch in better shape at 94-3 from 30 overs.
Ballance took 23 balls to get off the mark, but he later hit three boundaries in Kyle Abbott’s first over.
Brook also hit off-spinner Ollie Rayner’s fourth ball for a straight six in the penultimate over before lunch.
Ex-South Africa seamer Abbott was particularly wayward, conceding 39 in five overs. Ballance will resume on 39 and Brook 34.

Good afternoon and welcome to a sunny Ageas Bowl, where Yorkshire take on Hampshire in a floodlit pink ball County Championship clash, starting at 2pm.
Yorkshire head into this fixture with two wins from their first five outings, while Hampshire, second-bottom in Division One, have one win from six.
They will have current and former South Africa seamers Dale Steyn and Kyle Abbott at their disposal this week.
The floodlit matches are spread across the season this year, seemingly to minimise the chances of a repeat of last year when all matches were played in one round and it chucked it down up and down the country.
