Scorecard

Gary Ballance

“I do (love batting here). It was a pretty decent wicket, and it felt good batting out there in the middle. I think we have a decent score.

“They bowled well and in some good areas and made it tough to score, so we had to be patient. Once I got in, it was a nice paced pitch.

“When we went back out after tea, it took a bit of time to get used to the twilight. But I don’t want to make any excuses, it was a poor shot. I just got stuck in two minds.

“After tea, from around 7 onwards, it became harder than when the sun was out in the day.

“We fought back well after our start, and we finished the day very strongly.”

Close Yorkshire’s day as they reach 315-7 from 96 overs, with @timbresnan 33 and Patterson 18.

9.25pm Yorkshire have a third batting point as they pass 300. I’m sure they’ll be pretty chuffed with this outcome from 21-3. 303-7 with four overs left.

8.55pm Jack Leaning falls for a patient and important 39, chopping Fidel Edwards onto his stumps. Yorkshire are 277-7 in the 86th over.

8.36pm Hampshire have just said their crowd figure today is 850, including approximately 800 Hants/Yorks members. That is by far their lowest attendance of the season so far, with Yorkshire always their most popular fixture. Yorkshire 266-6 in the 82nd. No new ball yet.

8.28pm We have 17 overs remaining in the day. Yorkshire are 263-6 and batting is at its trickiest at present. Leaning 33 and Bresnan 10.

7.54pm Tattersall is caught at second slip off Steyn, 6. 245-6 in the 71st over.

7.48pm Ballance gone! He’s been caught at mid-wicket off Steyn for a superb 109. Yorkshire 235-5 in the 69th over.

Tea Report

Gary Ballance posted his first hundred of the season and his third in three innings at the Ageas Bowl this afternoon.

The former Yorkshire captain has led his side’s recovery from 21-3 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against Hampshire, with the visitors reaching tea at 228-4 from 64 overs.

Ballance shared 143 for the fourth wicket either side of lunch with Harry Brook, who was the only man to fall in a dominant afternoon session.

Brook had reached 79 by the time he was trapped lbw by the excellent Dale Steyn, leaving the score at 164-4 in the 49th over.

Otherwise, Hampshire’s bowlers have struggled after the White Rose won the toss and elected to bat.

Last season, Ballance scored a century and a double century in an April draw here. Today, Brook reached his fifty off 74 balls before Ballance followed him there off 99.

Ballance then reached his hundred in the final over of the session off 171 balls and will resume on 103. Jack Leaning is 19 not out.

7.05pm HUNDRED! Ballance reaches his first of the season off 171 balls by steering his 15th for wide of gully. 228-4 in the 64th. Magnificent.

6.35pm Yorkshire in decent order at 205-4 in the 58th over. Ballance’s 89 marks his highest Championship score of the season and needs three more for his highest score in all forms in 2018.

5.58pm Brook gone! He’s been trapped lbw by Steyn for 79, Yorkshire are 164-4 after 48 overs, ending a 143-run stand with Ballance, who remains unbeaten on 62. Jack Leaning comes to the crease.

5.50pm A real mixed bag from Hampshire’s seamers today. Steyn has been excellent. He’s into his eleventh over and has only conceded 13, while Edwards and Abbott have been expensive, the latter more so having conceded 39 in five overs. Yorkshire 158-3 in the 47th.

5.20pm Excellent from Gary Ballance and Harry Brook, who have put the pressure back on Hampshire with a stand of 116 and counting. There seems to be little assistance for the seamers, but these two were under immediate pressure at 21-3. Ballance has just pulled Edwards for six over long-leg to move to 50 off 99 balls. 137-3

5.07pm Harry Brook reaches his fifty off 74 balls with eight fours and a six. Yorkshire are 115-3 in the 36th over.

4.53pm Yorkshire have moved to 103-3 in the early stages of the afternoon.

Lunch Report

Gary Ballance and Harry Brook are leading the fightback for Yorkshire following the loss of three early wickets during the opening session against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

Steve Patterson won his first toss in charge of the White Rose’s Specsavers County Championship team and elected to bat, but saw his top order slip 21-3 inside 12 overs.

Alex Lees and Che Pujara fell for ducks, the latter losing his off and middle stumps to Dale Steyn, bowling with the new pink Kookaburra ball.

Adam Lyth also fell for 21, but the visitors have steadied to reach lunch in better shape at 94-3 from 30 overs.

Ballance took 23 balls to get off the mark, but he later hit three boundaries in Kyle Abbott’s first over.

Brook also hit off-spinner Ollie Rayner’s fourth ball for a straight six in the penultimate over before lunch.

Ex-South Africa seamer Abbott was particularly wayward, conceding 39 in five overs. Ballance will resume on 39 and Brook 34.

15.41pm Let’s hope Steve gets his own back later in the game!

3.28pm Harry Brook has just uppercut Kyle Abbott for four over point and whipped him through mid-wicket to move to 15 out of 58-3 after 21. Abbott has conceded five boundaries in his first two overs.

3.16pm Slow and watchful progress from Ballance and Brook as they bid to steady the ship against some accurate Hampshire bowling. There doesn’t seem to be exaggerated assistance for the seamers so far. 33-3 after 18 overs.

2.45pm Yorkshire have moved to 21-2 in the eleventh over, with Dale Steyn switching from the Hotel to the Pavilion End. Adam Lyth has all of the runs so far, with Gary Ballance for company.

2.23pm Dale Steyn bowls Che Pujara for a duck, knocking out off and middle stump. Yorkshire 10-2 in the sixth.

2.05pm Fidel Edwards traps Alex Lees lbw for a three-ball duck as Yorkshire slip to 1-1 after five balls. Che Pujara joins Adam Lyth at the crease.

Good afternoon and welcome to a sunny Ageas Bowl, where Yorkshire take on Hampshire in a floodlit pink ball County Championship clash, starting at 2pm.

Yorkshire head into this fixture with two wins from their first five outings, while Hampshire, second-bottom in Division One, have one win from six.

They will have current and former South Africa seamers Dale Steyn and Kyle Abbott at their disposal this week.

The floodlit matches are spread across the season this year, seemingly to minimise the chances of a repeat of last year when all matches were played in one round and it chucked it down up and down the country.

Finally, good luck to Jonny Tattersall, who makes his debut in first-class cricket here.
This is the first of two Championship matches in nine days, with Surrey next up at Scarborough from Monday.
