“It was interesting wasn’t it.
“It was difficult to sum up to be honest.
“There was plenty in pitch, and Essex bowled well. Every time there was something on offer we either missed it or nicked it. You’ve got to give credit to the bowlers.
“But for us to fight back, bowl them out cheaply and be 70 in front shows where we’re at. I think we’re in a good position. We’ve got a lot of batting still to come.
“The way Harry and Puj played at the end stands us in good stead.
“We scored 160 there in a session, and that doesn’t happen too often.
“We have a guy there who’s scored 14 Test hundreds with a young lad who has a huge amount of gift and excitement.
“We didn’t do ourselves justice in the first innings, so it’s not the most upbeat dressing room I’ve ever been in, but it’s a damn sight better than it could have been.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen 20 wickets fall in two sessions. What does tomorrow hold, who knows?”

6.23pm Some recovery from Yorkshire this. 50 all out and they still have a very, very good chance of winning the game. We head into the final half hour of play. 122-2 with a lead of 30.
5.55pm Adam Lyth falls to Peter Siddle, with Simon Harmer taking a juggling catch at second slip for 27. Yorkshire are now 97-2.
5.47pm Bairstow is bowled by Peter Siddle via the inside-edge for a fine 50. Yorkshire 77-1 and Harry Brook comes in at number three. As I type, Yorkshire move to 86-1, with a boundary apiece for Brook and Adam Lyth.
5.42pm Jonny Bairstow has his fifty, off 42 balls with six fours and a six. The move to promote him has reaped instant reward, with the White Rose now 77-0 and trailing by just 15.

Tea Report
Yorkshire’s bowlers have fought hard to limit the damage of being bowled out for 50 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford, with the hosts bowled out for 142 at tea.
Essex started the afternoon at 10-2 and slipped to 93-7, including Dan Lawrence’s 48. Simon Harmer hit a lusty 36 with the tail to boost the total.
The hosts went into the lead after 20 overs of their innings, although they slipped to 58-4 shortly afterwards when Steve Patterson had Ravi Bopara caught at first slip.
Tim Bresnan then took the next three wickets, bowling James Foster and trapping Dan Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate lbw, before Harmer’s useful intervention.
Bresnan, Jack Brooks and Ben Coad all claimed three wickets, with 31 overs still to be bowled in the day.
4.17pm With Essex nine down for 140, we have a delayed tea.

Lunch report
Yorkshire were bowled out for 50 inside just 19 overs on the opening morning of their Specsavers County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford, with 12 wickets falling in all.
The White Rose posted their lowest total since 1973 when they hit 43 in the second innings of a defeat against Surrey.
Essex reached lunch at 10-2.
Gary Ballance top-scored with 22 and was the last man out to Australian seamer Peter Siddle, who finished with figures of 4-7.
Sam Cook did the damage with the new ball, claiming 5-28, including Joe Root caught at first slip by Alastair Cook for a first ball duck and Jonny Bairstow bowled for seven.
Ballance was the only man to reach double figures.
Jack Brooks then had Alastair Cook caught behind for a duck and Tom Westley bowled middle stump.

Good morning from a dry and bright Chelmsford
Yorkshire face champions Essex looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Somerset at Taunton and secure their second win of the season in their fourth match.
The vast majority of the England players are available for this round, meaning it’s Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow v Alastair Cook ahead of the early summer Test series against Pakistan, which starts later this month.
At first glance, the pitch doesn’t look like a green top, so it will be interesting to see what team selection throws up and what Gary Ballance will opt to do with the toss.
This is the return fixture between these two sides after last month’s four-day abandonment at Emerald Headingley to start the summer. The good news is that we are expecting good weather all through the weekend.
While Yorkshire have drawn one, won one and lost one, Essex have drawn two and won one.
