Jonny Bairstow reaction

“It was interesting wasn’t it.

“It was difficult to sum up to be honest.

“There was plenty in pitch, and Essex bowled well. Every time there was something on offer we either missed it or nicked it. You’ve got to give credit to the bowlers.

“But for us to fight back, bowl them out cheaply and be 70 in front shows where we’re at. I think we’re in a good position. We’ve got a lot of batting still to come.

“The way Harry and Puj played at the end stands us in good stead.

“We scored 160 there in a session, and that doesn’t happen too often.

“We have a guy there who’s scored 14 Test hundreds with a young lad who has a huge amount of gift and excitement.

“We didn’t do ourselves justice in the first innings, so it’s not the most upbeat dressing room I’ve ever been in, but it’s a damn sight better than it could have been.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen 20 wickets fall in two sessions. What does tomorrow hold, who knows?”

6.40pm Harry Brook has his first fifty off 47 balls, taking Yorkshire to 151-2 with 2.1 overs remaining in the day. That’s a lead of 59.

6.23pm Some recovery from Yorkshire this. 50 all out and they still have a very, very good chance of winning the game. We head into the final half hour of play. 122-2 with a lead of 30.

5.55pm Adam Lyth falls to Peter Siddle, with Simon Harmer taking a juggling catch at second slip for 27. Yorkshire are now 97-2.

5.47pm Bairstow is bowled by Peter Siddle via the inside-edge for a fine 50. Yorkshire 77-1 and Harry Brook comes in at number three. As I type, Yorkshire move to 86-1, with a boundary apiece for Brook and Adam Lyth.

5.42pm Jonny Bairstow has his fifty, off 42 balls with six fours and a six. The move to promote him has reaped instant reward, with the White Rose now 77-0 and trailing by just 15.

5.28pm Yorkshire have gone beyond their first-innings total with all 10 wickets in tact. Some cracking strokes from Bairstow and Lyth so far, more so the former. Bairstow has 39 of 57-0 in the 12th over.

Tea Report

Yorkshire’s bowlers have fought hard to limit the damage of being bowled out for 50 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford, with the hosts bowled out for 142 at tea.

Essex started the afternoon at 10-2 and slipped to 93-7, including Dan Lawrence’s 48. Simon Harmer hit a lusty 36 with the tail to boost the total.

The hosts went into the lead after 20 overs of their innings, although they slipped to 58-4 shortly afterwards when Steve Patterson had Ravi Bopara caught at first slip.

Tim Bresnan then took the next three wickets, bowling James Foster and trapping Dan Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate lbw, before Harmer’s useful intervention.

Bresnan, Jack Brooks and Ben Coad all claimed three wickets, with 31 overs still to be bowled in the day.

4.17pm With Essex nine down for 140, we have a delayed tea.

4.03pm Further wickets for Jack Brooks and Ben Coad – Peter Siddle caught at mid-off and Jamie Porter lbw. Essex 121-9, leading by 71.

3.36pm Another for Bresnan – Ryan ten Doeschate lbw for 18. 93-7. Incredible.

Bresnan gets Foster

3.15pm James Foster is bowled through the gate by Tim Bresnan for three, leaving Essex six down for 80. This unbelievable day shows no signs of slowing up. We still have 47 overs to bowl.

3.02pm Tim Bresnan strikes, getting Dan Lawrence lbw for 48. @EssexCricket are 72-5 now.

Patto’s wicket

2.43pm Wicket for Steve Patterson, who has removed Ravi Bopara for nine, caught at first slip by Che Pujara. It’s 58-4.

2.37pm Essex have a first-innings lead at 51-3 after exactly 20 overs of their reply. Dan Lawrence has 37 of them and is in partnership with birthday boy Ravi Bopara (33 today) on five.

1.49pm Yorkshire have a third wicket as Ben Coad bowls Nick Browne for seven. 12-3.

Lunch report

Yorkshire were bowled out for 50 inside just 19 overs on the opening morning of their Specsavers County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford, with 12 wickets falling in all.

The White Rose posted their lowest total since 1973 when they hit 43 in the second innings of a defeat against Surrey.

Essex reached lunch at 10-2.

Gary Ballance top-scored with 22 and was the last man out to Australian seamer Peter Siddle, who finished with figures of 4-7.

Sam Cook did the damage with the new ball, claiming 5-28, including Joe Root caught at first slip by Alastair Cook for a first ball duck and Jonny Bairstow bowled for seven.

Ballance was the only man to reach double figures.

Jack Brooks then had Alastair Cook caught behind for a duck and Tom Westley bowled middle stump.

12.59pm Tom Westley bowled by Brooks, 0. 2-2. Here’s the Cook wicket.

12.50pm I can’t remember seeing a more dramatic session of cricket than this. Alastair Cook has been caught behind off Jack Brooks for nought. It’s 2-1 in the second over.

12.36pm Yorkshire have been bowled out for 50 inside 19 overs as Ballance edges Siddle to third slip for 22. It’s their lowest total since 43 v Surrey at the Oval in 1973. Siddle 4-7 and Sam Cook 5-28.

12.26pm Jack Brooks caught at third slip off Siddle. Two in the over. 45-9.

12.22pm Steve Patterson caught behind off Peter Siddle for two. Yorkshire 45-8.

12.16pm Wickets continue to fall, unfortunately. Sam Cook has five as he traps Tim Bresnan lbw for one. Yorkshire are 42-7 in the 16th over.

11.57am Very very tough chance goes begging for Essex, Dan Lawrence at third slip diving to his right gets a finger end to a Jack Leaning drive at Sam Cook on one at the time. Anyway, it goes for four. Would have been 26-6 in the in the 12th. Now 32-5.

11.41am Jonny Bairstow has been bowled, off-stump rocked back, by Sam Cook, who has four-for in double quick time. Jonny has fallen for seven and Yorkshire are 22-5 after eight.

11.29am Nice from Jonny Bairstow, who drives his fifth ball down the ground for four off Cook. 16-4 in the sixth.

11.24am Yorkshire under the cosh as Che Pujara is trapped lbw by Jamie Porter for 9. Yorkshire are 11-4 in the fifth over.

11.15am Second wicket for Essex and Sam Cook, who gets Adam Lyth caught behind driving for nought. Early bother for Yorkshire at 9-2. Hang on….it’s 9-3. Root caught first slip by Alastair Cook first ball.

11.07am Early strike for Essex comes courtesy of Sam Cook, who entices Harry Brook into playing at one outside off, defensively, and he offers up a low slip catch to Simon Harmer at second. 0-1.

11.01am The game is underway with a Jamie Porter maiden to Adam Lyth. Now Sam Cook to Harry Brook.

Good morning from a dry and bright Chelmsford

Yorkshire face champions Essex looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Somerset at Taunton and secure their second win of the season in their fourth match.

The vast majority of the England players are available for this round, meaning it’s Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow v Alastair Cook ahead of the early summer Test series against Pakistan, which starts later this month.

At first glance, the pitch doesn’t look like a green top, so it will be interesting to see what team selection throws up and what Gary Ballance will opt to do with the toss.

This is the return fixture between these two sides after last month’s four-day abandonment at Emerald Headingley to start the summer. The good news is that we are expecting good weather all through the weekend.

While Yorkshire have drawn one, won one and lost one, Essex have drawn two and won one.
