Yorkshire’s bowling coach Mick Lewis was far from downbeat after witnessing a tough day two for the county against Durham at the Banks Homes Riverside.

Durham closed on 264-1 in their first-innings reply to Yorkshire’s 307 all out, with Alex Lees and Emilio Gay both posting centuries.

George Hill claimed the only wicket, that of England Test hopeful Ben McKinney caught at second slip by Adam Lyth this morning.

Australian Lewis said: “It’s not ideal for us at the moment, but the good thing about tomorrow is it’s a new day and we’ll come back and hopefully get a couple of wickets before the new ball and reload from there.

“I think they had a few plays and misses early doors – a bit of luck. A few nicks didn’t carry, a lot of gaps, nicks going in gaps, that type of thing.

“It’s a disappointing day, but that’s life. So far this year, the boys have been brilliant with what they’ve been doing. You’re not going to get it right all the time.

“They put a heavy roller on, so that’s probably helped settle the wicket down a little bit. When we got the ball in the right areas, there was still enough there. But the boys said the ball went quite soft early and went out of shape.

“It was probably that middle session where we let the scoreboard get away from us a bit, and we’re going to have to play pretty good cricket for the rest of the game now.”

Yorkshire fans got their first sighting of new overseas signing Ben Sears with the ball today, the New Zealand fast bowler returning figures of 0-56 from 12 overs.

Lewis added: “He did alright. I think it’s challenging for him because, as an overseas player, I think people just expect him to perform straightaway.

“He’s learning about English conditions. I’m not sure he’s played over here too much before. He’ll learn from today. I’ve already had a chat about a few things, so he’ll be fine.”
