Jack White says Yorkshire’s new bowling coach Mick Lewis has been “amazing” to work with over the last month and a bit.

The former Australia limited overs fast bowler followed Anthony McGrath from Essex to Headingley, but he only started work with the county’s at the beginning of March.

Lewis travelled to Abu Dhabi on pre-season tour with the men’s squad last month, and he has already made a positive impact believes new ball seamer White.

“Mick’s been very good – amazing,” said White. “I’ve really enjoyed him.

“He’s just makes you feel so comfortable.

“I’ve been working on a few things, and he’s very clear. He’s very clear with all of our plans. There’s no waffle or anything. He’s a really good guy.

“He’s a character as well, which is what you need because it’s a long season. You need someone who can enjoy it with you and make it good fun. That’s what this game should be – good fun.”

White was excellent on debut against Hampshire at the weekend, claiming five wickets across both innings of the five-wicket defeat at the Utilita Bowl.

The former Northamptonshire man claimed 3-51 from 19 overs in the first innings and 2-34 from 11 in the second. Coach McGrath described his performance as “fantastic”.

White is in line to make his home debut against Worcestershire at Headingley on Friday, a venue where he made his last appearance for Northamptonshire last September.

“I’ve loved bowling with the lads so far,” he said.

“Coady, what a bowler. I remember playing at Headingley last year and couldn’t wait to watch him bowl. It’s going to be great bowling with him day in and day out.

“Hilly as well, Cliffy’s a seriously good bowler, they’re all very talented. Hopefully I can do my bit.”

Heading into the Worcestershire clash, Yorkshire will almost certainly be without Ben Cliff, who suffered a side injury on day one at Hampshire. The severity of that injury will become clear over the next couple of days as the youngster is scanned.

New Zealander Ben Sears will also miss the clash to manage a minor heel injury. The plan is for the overseas quick to debut up at Durham on April 18.

Ben Coad

“Injuries are part of it, but the likes of Milnes and Revis are getting there,” continued White. “Once they’re back, there’s a real battery of fast bowlers. Once they’re fit and we have two overseas, we can just rotate and keep everyone fresh.”

After Sears arrives to be available for the remaining five Championship matches in the opening block of seven, Australian Jordan Buckingham follows quickly.

He is due to play in the four Championship matches through May and is someone White is looking forward to seeing again having been a team-mate of his in 2023.

Buckingham – now 24-years-old – played three Championship matches for Northamptonshire, with the pair sharing the new ball.

“He’s a very good bowler who charged in,” added White. “He only played two or three games, but you could tell he’s a competitor. He’s very slippery. He was only 21 or 22 when he came to us, but it seems like he’s developed nicely since. He’s a really nice lad. I got on with him very well, and I’m looking forward to seeing him again.”
