George Hill is expecting another tug of war day of Rothesay County Championship cricket between Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire tomorrow, the all-rounder saying the visitors need to be “relentless” with the ball.
Notts’ closed day two on 55-3, a lead of 127 in their second innings.
They have the advantage, though not by a huge amount at this stage in bowler-friendly conditions.
Hill was the standout performer in a Yorkshire shirt today, helping recover their first innings from 124-8 to 179 all out with an attacking 58 before striking once with the ball after tea.
“Obviously the wicket’s playing a few more tricks today. But, yeah, I think the fightback we showed with the ball this evening, obviously getting them three down, Coady and Whitey set the tone brilliantly.
“It’s just about slamming the wicket as well as we can and try and hit the dents. If we do, there’ll certainly be some movement.
“It’s about being sort of relentless tomorrow.
“It’ll be proper tough cricket tomorrow.”
On his own innings, which saw him marshal the tail, he said: “It was good fun.
“It’s definitely a role that I’ll be working on this winter because I’ve not done it a huge amount coming into this year.
“I thought Cliffy was brilliant. He hung around with me for a substantial amount of balls..
“My thought was, ‘There’s no point hanging around with a ball with potentially your name on it’.
“I thought I’d try and be positive – not particularly reckless but positive. I played to my strengths, and luckily it sort of paid off.”
And on the prospect of a chase for victory at some point tomorrow and into day four, Hill added: “Obviously, we don’t know what the wicket’s going to do. It might flatten out with a heavy roller, it might get worse.
“We can’t control what the wicket’s going to do, but we can control our attitude coming into the chase.
“Jonny has spoken to us about what a great chasing ground this.
“Around 220 would be brilliant, but anything we’ll believe we can chase.”
