Adam Lyth says confidence is high within Yorkshire’s camp that they can claim full reward for their endeavour with victory over Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl.
Yorkshire need seven wickets on day four for their third win in nine Rothesay County Championship matches this season. Hampshire closed day three on 106-3, needing 172 more for their own victory.
Lyth claimed one of the second-innings wickets to fall with his off-spin, adding to two in the first innings, including his 50th career first-class wicket.
He also hit 51 in Yorkshire’s second innings, which started last night and concluded just before tea today on 301 all out.
“I think it’s a fantastic day for us,” said the opening batter and golden arm off-spinner.
“I thought this morning the way Wharts and Rev played set it up nicely. Obviously Jonny played fantastically well as well.
“To get a lead of 277, we’d have taken that all day long from where we were a day ago.
“I think we’re in the box-seat. The pitch now is starting to turn more and more, and we’ve got three spinners.
“Hopefully tomorrow us three spinners can do the bulk of the work and then, you never know, the seamers can get some as well.
“I think maybe we let them off the hook a little bit with 10 or 15, maybe 20, runs tonight. But, look, when there’s men around the bat, you’re always going to be leaking a few here and there. But yeah, 170-odd tomorrow, we’re right in this game.”
Lyth continued: “We’ve got the runs on the board, which we’d have taken every day of the week. It’s up to the bowlers now.
“Every single bowler tomorrow has got to turn up and put the ball in the right area for a long period of time and keep the scoreboard down as much as we can.
“It’s been pretty much two an over for the whole game. So, if we can create some pressure, I’m sure the wickets will come.
“If we can bring on the points tomorrow, it’ll be absolutely massive for us.”
And on the pitch, he added: “We’ve seen the odd one go down for the seamers, so that’s obviously going to play a part at some point tomorrow, I’d imagine. But spin’s probably the biggest threat.”
