George Hill sees no reason why Yorkshire can’t have “a crazy couple of days” with the ball as they push for victory over Leicestershire at Scarborough.
The loss of 111 overs across the first two days of their 10th-round Rothesay County Championship match has made achieving a positive result tricky for either side.
Yorkshire were bowled out for 263 on the stroke of tea on day two today before Leicestershire responded with 12-0.
All-rounder Hill completed an impressive 62 today, added to James Wharton’s 70.
Conditions have been bowler-friendly over the first two days, and Yorkshire would love that to continue tomorrow and Sunday, and for there to be no more interruptions.
Hill said: “If we rock up with the right intent tomorrow instead of being a bit laid back thinking the rain will come blah, blah, blah, you can have a crazy couple of days.
“We have to be thinking about taking 10 wickets as quickly as possible, and you never know what can happen.
“We can’t control the weather, but we can definitely control our attitude.”
Yorkshire started day two on 144-5, with Hill on one. He was watchful early on before becoming more expansive as he ran out of partners. He shared half-century partnerships for the seventh and ninth wickets with Dom Bess (21) and Ben Cliff (22).
The latter, 53 off 29 balls, helped Yorkshire secure a batting bonus point for passing 250.
Cliff hit three successive boundaries off Rehan Ahmed’s leg-spin before being bowled next ball.
“It felt pretty challenging to start with today,” said Hill.
“Obviously the conditions have favoured the bowlers these last two days, and when they put it in the right areas it was tough.
“There was swing, there was nip and the typical Scarborough bounce we always talk about here. It took a while to get used to but felt alright towards the end.
“Cliffy was awesome and probably outscored me.
“I said to him when he came out, ‘I’m going to back you and take every single run’.
“To get to that 250 was our goal. We spoke about that being around about par.
“With the weather around, it should continue to be helpful for bowling, and with the bowlers we’ve got – five good seamers and a top-class spinner – we’re pretty confident.”
