Will Fraine posted a classy maiden first-class century in Yorkshire’s commanding 327 on day one of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Surrey at Scarborough – but it could have been so much better as they lost six afternoon wickets for only 44.
The 23-year-old opener’s 106 off 149 balls was the standout performance of an action-packed opening day, which looked set to be a hugely dominant one for the White Rose as they serenely progressed to 187-1.
But, shortly before tea, it was a completely different picture as Yorkshire were 231-7.
Jordan Clark continued his liking for playing against Yorkshire with 5-77 from 17.4 overs, his second career five-wicket haul.
Last season, whilst playing for Lancashire, he dismissed Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow in a Roses hat-trick on the way to his first five-for.
Surrey closed on 48-0 from 14 overs in reply, with Mark Stoneman 28.
Huddersfield-born Fraine, an early winter signing from Nottinghamshire, shared a 116 opening partnership with Adam Lyth (55) before lunch, the county’s first since September 2017.
He then went on to reach three figures midway through the afternoon before falling as one of four wickets for 18 runs (187-1 to 205-5).
Fraine latched onto anything short, particularly on the off-side, and pulled Clark for six over mid-wicket to move into the nineties. He also drove two eye-catching boundaries down the ground, two of 19 fours.
He was not without luck, however, as he was dropped on 31 by Dean Elgar at gully off Clark before lunch – a sharp chance but one which should have been taken. Ben Foakes then failed to grasp a catch down leg off Rikki Clarke with him on 102.
Clark claimed three of the initial four wickets on a pitch offering significant bounce, if a touch slower than usual here.
Gary Ballance was the first of the afternoon wickets, caught at second slip by Scott Borthwick off a swinging Clark delivery for 23 – 187-2 after 42 overs. Tom Kohler-Cadmore then played on to the same bowler almost four overs later.
Fraine was caught behind off Morne Morkel in front of a 3,689 crowd before Clark had Jack Leaning caught at second slip by Borthwick for a duck as the score fell to 205-5 in the 50th.
Sam Curran then struck twice in two balls at the end of the 58th and start of the 60th overs as Yorkshire fell further to 231-7 – David Willey was caught at mid-wicket following a miscued pull and South African overseas spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled by a full toss for a golden duck on debut.
The England Test left-arm swing bowler briefly left the field before tea as a precaution following a recent hamstring injury, only to return later on and bowl after tea. Curran had conceded 55 runs in his first 11 overs before improving, as Surrey did.
Jonny Tattersall was caught behind down leg off Clark early in the evening (250-8 in the 66th) before Steve Patterson led the search for lower order runs with an entertaining 46.
Ben Coad hit five fours in 25 before skewing Morkel to point.
Clark then wrapped up the innings with his fifth wicket when Patterson edged to Clarke at first slip, leaving Surrey with nearly an hour’s batting before close.
The day started with Patterson winning Yorkshire’s 10th successive toss (discounting uncontested tosses), a post war record for the county.
