England spinner Jack Leach led Somerset to their second win of the season with a six-wicket haul against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
The left-armer took 6 for 36 while Jack Brooks finished with 4 for 22 as Notts were bowled out for 126 to lose by an innings and 14 runs.
Leach’s victims included England hopeful Joe Clarke and was Somerset’s seventh in a row over Nottinghamshire. He said: “The seamers bowled brilliantly so after two days I was so desperate to contribute.
“It is tough for spinners at this time of the year because of the cold so it was nice to get a spell under my belt and things began to happen very quickly after that. It was a really good team performance from us.”
Hampshire’s Sam Northeast was out for 99 and a duck in the same day as they were forced to follow on 252 runs behind dominant Yorkshire at the Ageas Bowl.
Northeast, who made a century in Hampshire’s opening game against Essex, was one of three victims for South African Duanne Olivier in the first innings, having spent 14 overs in the 90s. Batting again, Hampshire subsided to 54 for 5 with Northeast lasting seven balls before he became one of three victims for Steve Patterson. They still trail by 198.
Warwickshire opener Dominic Sibley scored 132, his fifth successive Championship hundred, but they are struggling against Kent at Edgbaston. Following on 158 in arrears the Bears reached 79 for 4, still 79 behind, with Sibley out for five in the second innings and promoted Kent poised to claim their first top-flight success since 2010.
Skipper Ryan ten Doeschate led from the front with 130 as Essex gained a first-innings lead over champions Surrey of 53 at the Kia Oval. Essex were dismissed for 448 with Dan Lawrence contributing 87 but Surrey reached 68 without loss at stumps and the game looks to be heading for a draw.
In Division Two, Lancashire dodged the showers at Lord’s to build a strong position against Middlesex thanks to a career-best 122 from Rob Jones. Tim Murtagh took 5 for 69 but Lancashire had a first-innings lead of 162 then James Anderson removed Nick Gubbins for a duck. Middlesex were 64 for 1 at the close, still 98 in arrears.
Sussex are on course for victory over Durham at Chester-le-Street after bowling out their hosts for 189 despite Gareth Harte’s unbeaten 74. David Wiese took 5 for 43 and then Sussex, chasing 212 for victory, reached 144 for 3 with another South African Stiaan van Zyl 66 not out and 68 more needed.
Leicestershire followed on 251 behind Worcestershire at Grace Road after they were bowled out for 302, Josh Tongue taking 4 for 46. The Foxes were soon 11 for 3 in their second innings before rallying to 132 for 4, still 119 behind and heading for defeat.
A diligent 98 from Gareth Roderick enabled Gloucestershire to take a lead of 59 against Derbyshire at Bristol before they were bowled out for 350. Derbyshire reached stumps on 97 got 2, 38 in front, and a draw looks the likely outcome.
A high-scoring draw looks certain at Cardiff where Northamptonshire openers Ricardo Vasconcelos and Rob Newton put on a county record 303 against Glamorgan with Vasconcelos scoring a career-best 140. Josh Cobb and Rob Keogh made half-centuries as the visitors reached 522 for 4 at stumps, still 48 behind.
