Jos Buttler says Harry Brook is the ideal man to take on the role of his vice captain in England’s white ball team – an appointment revealed earlier this week.
Brook, 25-years-old, captained England during the late summer home series against Australia last year – an assignment Buttler missed because of injury.
Buttler said: “He’s got all the attributes you need to be be a captain.
“He’s someone I will lean on for advice on the field and get his point of view.
“We want to be really watchable, really exciting and be an aggressive team that wants to take the game on. Certainly the way Harry plays his cricket, watching him from the side captain against Australia, he was as positive a captain as I’ve ever seen.”
England are aiming to level the five-match T20I series at 1-1 in Chennai tomorrow afternoon (1.30pm UK).
Yorkshire youngsters Erin Thomas and Alex Wade are both on England Under 19s duty in Malaysia and South Africa respectively.
Batter Thomas has helped England’s women into the Super Six stage of the Under 19s T20 World Cup in Asia, them winning two of their opening three group stage matches. The other was a No Result.
England play Nigeria and New Zealand tomorrow and Monday as they bid for a place in next Friday’s semi-finals.
Thomas has posted scores of two and nought in two appearances at the top of the order.
Fast bowler Wade, meanwhile, didn’t play in any of the three Youth ODIs in South Africa, which the hosts won 2-1. He did play in the warm-up game but went wicketless.
Wade will hope to play in the first of two Youth Test Matches, which starts in Stellenbosch on Monday.
Joe Root won the battle of Yorkshire v Yorkshire by overcoming Jonny Bairstow earlier this week in the SAT20 as the Paarl Royals beat Joburg Super Kings. But Bairstow did score 60 in that match compared to Root’s six.
Both of Yorkshire’s stars have had impressive campaigns so far, with Root scoring two half-centuries to Bairstow’s one.
Root is amongst the top three run-scorers in the competition with 201 from six matches (six innings) to his name, while Bairstow has 143 runs from five matches (four innings). Joburg play today aiming for a third win in six matches.
The Royals are top of the table having won five of their six matches.
Dawid Malan has also made a strong start to his time in the Bangladesh Premier League with title-chasing Fortune Barisal. Malan missed the start of the competition but has posted scores of 56 not out and 49 not out in three innings.
Jordan Thompson is yet to feature for defending champions MI Emirates in the ILT20, where Adam Lyth came up against Adil Rashid before the latter linked up with England’s white ball squad in India.
Lyth has a best score of 32 in four innings for Gulf Giants out in the UAE, while Rashid claimed three wickets in as many appearances for Sharjah Warriorz.
The Warriorz beat the Giants in the opening game of the tournament just under a fortnight ago, but both sides are struggling towards the bottom of the table.
Unfortunately for Jafer Chohan, he missed out on a Big Bash final appearance with Sydney Sixers in Australia. They were beaten in the semi-final by their cross-town rivals Thunder this morning. Thunder chased152 to win by four wickets and set up Monday’s final with Hobart Hurricanes.
Chohan encouraged with four wickets in four BBL appearances for the Sixers. He only bowled in three of those because of weather.
Noah Kelly posted scores of 40 and 39 for Beaumaris upon the resumption of Australian club cricket after Christmas.
Harry Duke, also in Melbourne, hit a 30 for Essendon in recent weeks, while Rebecca Duckworth has had her debut for Gold Coast Dolphins women delayed by rain in Queensland.
A handful of Yorkshire players are wintering in Australia, with Kelly enjoying most on-field success.
Will Luxton and Ben Cliff are both with Greenvale in Victorian Premier cricket and were involved in a 50-over day night fixture on January 11, played at the CitiPower Centre in St Kilda – the base of the Victorian state team.
Dom Bess is also in Sydney with Mosman, while Sterre Kalis is in the same city playing for Gordon women.
All of those players will hopefully be in action this weekend.
Lauren Winfield-Hill, meanwhile, has been undertaking media commitments on Australian TV for the ongoing women’s Ashes, combining that with playing state cricket for Queensland.
They have not played for almost a fortnight but are back in action in their 50-over competition on Tuesday against South Australia, for whom ex-team-mate Hollie Armitage is playing.
Former Yorkshire off-spinner and second-team coach Richard Dawson was this week appointed as Glamorgan’s head coach for the forthcoming summer.
Dawson, the former Gloucestershire head coach who has recently been working in the England set-up, has joined the Sophia Gardens county on an interim basis as a replacement for Grant Bradburn, who was sacked in December.
Dawson’s deal with Glamorgan sees him lead them in both the Rothesay County Championship and the Vitality Blast. But he will not be in charge for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
It means there are now five homegrown ex-Yorkshire players coaching across men’s county cricket, including our own Anthony McGrath.
Gareth Batty is in charge of champions Surrey, Mark Robinson is head coach at Warwickshire and Chris Silverwood has recently returned to Essex, as McGrath’s replacement.
In addition, former Yorkshire overseas batter Darren Lehmann will be leading Northamptonshire this season.
Yorkshire Physical Disability wicketkeeper-batter Liam Thomas and England fell one game short of winning their T20 quad series in Sri Lanka earlier this week.
England were beaten by India in the final in Colombo on Tuesday, beaten by 79 runs.
England took on hosts Sri Lanka – coached by Thomas’s Yorkshire D40 team-mate Kyle Clayton – India and Pakistan.
They won four of their seven matches, with Thomas taking the Yorkshire bragging rights as England beat Sri Lanka twice. Unfortunately, however, he missed out on the ultimate prize.
