Yorkshire are closing in on a new batting coach.

The interview stage for the new appointment will take place imminently, with first-team coach Andrew Gale revealing there have been some very strong applicants.

“We’re going to be interviewing in the next few weeks,” he said.

“Depending on whoever we appoint, I’m hopeful by South Africa (pre-season tour to Potchefstroom through mid-March) we’ll have someone in place as long as it fits with the person’s own situation.

“We’ve had applicants from all over the world, some really big names, some guys who have worked in county cricket and others who haven’t.

“We’ve narrowed that down and will interview those shortly.”

Joe Root has finished his short-term spell in Australia’s Big Bash League.
