Second XI Championship – Three-day game

Report

When Matthew Waite dismissed Lamb third ball of the day hopes were high, however Alex Mellor and Hammond added 114 before a further breakthrough was made. Again, it was Matthew Waite who had Hammond caught at second slip by Jack Leaning – Hammond had made 59 from 101 balls with 10 fours. Mellor reached his half century from 72 balls (10 fours) and he was unbeaten on 55 at lunch with Warwickshire 140-3, trailing by 187.

The post lunch session started with six maidens from the first seven overs but it took the reintroduction of Ed Barnes to the attack to take the fourth wicket, that of Mellor lbw for 66 from 130 balls. Then similar to our innings a further two wickets fell in a short period to reduce Warwickshire to 176-6 – a further wicket to Barnes and one for Jack Shutt.

There followed a partnership of 29 between Lintott and Griffin that was ended when George Hill bowled the former for 17, Griffin was caught at slip by Warner and tea was delayed when the ninth wicket fell – this only lasted a further 15 balls as they were dismissed for 232. Jack Shutt finished with 4-43.

Tea was taken with Yorkshire having a lead of 95. Bilal Anjam and James Wharton steadily took the opening stand to 31 before Bilal was lbw by Bethell and four balls later he had Jack Leaning caught at first slip for six and we were 37-2. The score had advanced to 55 when George Hill was bowled for 11, however James Wharton remained steadfast and he was unbeaten at the close with 28 from 89 balls and with him was Matthew Waite 17 not out from 19 balls.

At the close we were 79-3 leading by 174 going into the final day.
