Toss

Derbyshire won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Report

Yorkshire beat Derbyshire by 52 runs in front of a sizeable crowd at Shaw Lane to almost guarantee a semi final appearance. We finished on eight points and are currently in first place, however Durham have six points with two games to play (Lancs, 3rd June and Warwicks 10th June) whilst Worcestershire also have six points with a game at Northants on 10th June, but they will have to win and overturn their far inferior net run rate.

Yorkshire made several changes for this game from the Championship side of the last three days. Karl Carver and Josh Poysden replaced James Logan and Jack Shutt and Arjun Ramkumar replaced Finlay Bean.

Derby won the toss and asked us to bat first. Will Fraine and Ben Birkhead added 17 before Ben was caught behind for two in the fourth over and this became 21-2 when Will was taken at second slip for 15. Jordan Thompson was dropped first ball but went on to “top score” with 36 from 37 balls with a four and three sixes. Jordan and Bilal Anjam had added 73 in 53 balls but Bilal departed soon after Jordan making 31 from 37 balls with 5 fours and a six.

Our 100 came up from 95 balls but the next 50 took a further 105 balls as we entered a period of consolidation and no boundary was scored from the 20th to the 34th over. Matthew Fisher made 30 from 65 and Ed Barnes 24 from 52 and there were also 27 extras as we were all out for 209 with 9 balls of our 50 overs remaining.

Matthew Fisher struck early having Dinnie caught behind for six and was unlucky not to have further “victims” but finished with 1-17 from 8 overs. His opening partner, Matt Pillans, falls into the same bracket as he was wicketless but bowled 7 overs for 18. Tight bowling throughout steadily increased Derbyshire’s required run rate and regular loss of wickets didn’t help.
Ed Barnes had 2-29 from 8, Matt Taylor 1-18 and there were three wickets each for Josh Poysden (3-44) and Jordan Thompson 3-26 – Jordan also took four catches and Ben Birkhead three as Derbyshire finished 52 short being all out for 157.
