When Dom Bess, and his head coach Anthony McGrath, undertook their media duties at the end of Yorkshire’s commanding seven-wicket win over Essex at Chelmsford on Tuesday, they didn’t know who their quarter-final opponents would be.

If things go well this weekend, and again in late September, Gavin Hamilton will have been general manager of cricket at Yorkshire and will have two Metro Bank One-Day Cup titles to show for it. 

“I’m delighted for Rooty,” said Anthony McGrath, his Yorkshire coach. “He’s our best player, and also very passionate about England, so I think there’s no better man to step in.”
