Report

Featuring several players expected to play at Scarborough next week for the first team, Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl.

Derbyshire added 23 for the first wicket. However this soon became 49 for 7, and at lunch it was 69 for 7. Heavy rain during the lunch interval delayed the restart by 10 minutes and seemed to refresh the Derbyshire batters as they added 55 for the eighth wicket with Marshall making 69 from 88 balls and they were eventually dismissed for 148. Duanne Olivier took 3 for 45 from 13 overs and Steve Patterson 4 for 20 from 10.

Will Fraine was lbw in the first over and James Wharton departed soon after. Jack Leaning and Harry Brook added 56 however 89 for 2 became 92 for 5 before Matthew Waite ended the day 42 not out from 64 balls.

Yorkshire closed on 177 for 7, a lead of 29.

Second XI Season update

This is the second update for the 2019 season, which covers the end of our Championship campaign and the T20 Northern group.

We have played the final three games in the Championship but two of the three were badly affected by rain – at Liverpool against Lancashire we had several interruptions on day two and the final day was abandoned without a ball being bowled – the match was drawn.

At Stamford Bridge we beat Warwickshire by 88 runs. However our last game at Desborough against Northants was drawn as 202 overs were lost on the first two days.

Our eight games saw us use 28 different players including seven teenagers. We have won three, drawn four and lost only once totalling 103 points. At present, and according to the latest table I can find, it puts us level at the top with Nottinghamshire, however Leicestershire play Lancashire at Kibworth from 12th August and either of these sides can overtake us – we can only watch and wait.

In the Championship Will Fraine made 420 runs at an average of 70 and Jordan Thompson 255 at 63.75, whilst Jared Warner took 13 wickets at 12.92 including our only “five for”. Ed Barnes took 12 at 22.83, Josh Poysden 11 at 21.55 and Jack Shutt 11 at 33.

In the T20 we played 12 games, winning six, losing five and having one no result when the second game at Blackpool was abandoned due to thunderstorms – this left us with 13 points. The top two from the Northern group play the top two from the Southern group in a final’s day and again the latest table shows us second but several other counties have “games in hand”.

Tim Bresnan batted six times without being dismissed and scoring 236 runs with a strike rate of 144.79 – he also took eight wickets whilst Jack Leaning scored 327 runs with a strike rate of 136.82 (Three scores of 50+), Jack also took 14 wickets including our only “five for”.

We will be checking for updates to the tables however, at present, our remaining fixtures are a three-day friendly at York against Surrey (27th to 29th August); three-day friendly at Hove against Sussex (10th to 12th September) and three-day friendly at Scarborough against Durham (16th to 18th September).
