YORKSHIRE LEAGUE NORTH – Saturday 20 July 2019

On Saturday the Academy hosted Sheriff Hutton Bridge in a match that was played at Emerald Headingley.

Tom Loten the Academy captain won the toss and put the visitors into bat. After the rain of the previous day and overnight surprisingly the match started on time.

The Sheriff Hutton Bridge openers Louis Foxton and former Academy player Eddie Barnes put on a partnership of 51 before Barnes was bowled for 30. Adam Fisher joined Foxton and the pair took the score onto 96 before Foxton fell for 38. Adam Fisher was the third wicket to fall in the next over to leave the visitors on 102 for 3 in the 20th over. Dulash Udayanga their overseas player from Sri Lanka and Tommy Hudson put on a stand of 88 before Udanyanga was dismissed for 44 with 5 fours. Hudson soon followed for 41. Another former Academy player Karl Carver and Mark Fisher put together a stand of 63 for the sixth wicket before Carver went for 33. Again another wicket fell in the next with Mark Fisher going for 29. The Sheriff Hutton Bridge innings finished on an excellent 292 for 8 in the 50 overs with the top eight batsmen all making worthwhile contributions.

Wickets were shared between Archie Greaves 2 for 27, Tom Loten 2 for 41, Edward Booth 2 for 64, Harrison Quarmby 1 for 28 and Harry Sullivan 1 for 51.

In the reply the Academy struggled against the opening attack and lost the first wicket of Matthew Revis with the score on eight in the sixth over. The big wicket of captain Tom Loten was taken in the 11th over to leave the Academy struggling at 26 for 2.

James Wharton and Arjun Ramkumar took the score onto 64 before the important wicket of Wharton was taken. Wicket keeper Harry Duke came in and was the next wicket to fall at 83. Ramkumar contributed 28 before becoming the fifth wicket to leave the Academy on 108 for 6 in the 31st over. Some lusty blows from Archie Greaves took the total to 146 before Greaves was out for 40 which included 3 fours and 2 sixes the wicket falling in the 42nd over. Unfortunately the last three wickets fell at the same score of 167 with the final wicket taken with four balls remaining as opener Will Luxton did not return to bat after he had retired hurt in only the second over.

The wicket takers were Dulash Udayanga 2 for 12, David Henstock 2 for 22, Mark Fisher 2 for 26, Karl Carver 2 for 34 and Eddie Barnes 1 for 37.

Despite the defeat for Yorkshire Academy it was a privilege and worthwhile experience for both sides to play on the hallowed turf of Headingley.
