— 18 July 2019

Stamford Bridge CC

Second XI Championship – Three-day game

Yorkshire clinched victory with 18 overs to spare, defeating Warwickshire by 88 runs to earn the maximum 24 points.

We had resumed day three leading by 174 runs and Waite and Wharton advanced our total to 113 before the former was caught for 47, made from 113 balls. Waite reached his half century from 53 balls but two balls later was caught at mid wicket – 144-5. Ben Birkhead hit 15 from nine balls but was bowled on the last ball of the 49th over and the 50th was one to remember for 15 year old Jake Bethell as he claimed a triple wicket maiden: Loten stumped, Logan caught at deep square leg and Warner caught at long on.

We declared at 172-9 leaving Warwickshire 268 to win from a minimum of 74 overs. Jared Warner struck in his first over and Matthew Waite in the last over before lunch and they were 12-2.

Post lunch Jack Shutt claimed the first of his four wickets having Lamb lbw and soon after bowled Mellor for 38, Warwickshire 68 for 4. This became 77 for 5 and 78 for 6 and at tea they were 95 for 6, however a wicket fell in the second over after tea (99-7) and Ed Barnes took his second to reduce them 102-8. A partnership of 25 saw them to 127-9 and it was the last pair of Hughes and Garrett who added 51 in 38 balls to give them a final total of 178 all out.

Next second team action is Wednesday 24th with two T20s v Derby at Glossop, followed by two T20s at Blackpool v Lancashire on Thursday 25th July.
