REPORT: Yorkshire Vikings v Lancashire (RLODC)

— 21 April 2019

Scorecard

Yorkshire lost their unbeaten start to the Royal London one-day Cup as Lancashire defended a 312 target, 16 off the last over and three off the last ball to win an Easter Sunday thriller at Emerald Headingley.

Jonny Tattersall hit the first two balls of the last over for four against three-wicket seamer Saqib Mahmood before being run out.

Josh Poysden fell the same way off the final ball going for two to square-leg, meaning the Vikings were 310 all out and have won one, tied one and lost one in the North group.

Lancashire had lost their first two games.

A gripping clash saw Lancashire, who elected to bat, recover from 116-4 in the 23rd over to 311-6, underpinned by Steven Croft’s 97.

The Vikings then slipped to 87-3 in the 21st over of their chase.

But Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s 97 and 72 for Gary Ballance set up a grandstand finish in front of 4,683 crowd.

They shared 127 inside 18 overs for the fourth wicket to kick-start the innings.

Croft’s patient 117-ball knock was a necessity given the position Lancashire found themselves in against an accurate attack backed up by some slick fielding.

But the real impetus was provided by young duo Rob Jones and Josh Bohannon, who hit 65 off 51 balls and 55 not out off 32 respectively.

All-rounder Bohannon hit two sixes in a 31-ball fifty and scored all of the 41 Tim Bresnan conceded in the 48th and 50th overs of an innings played out on a surface which offered the bowlers something with the new ball.

Fifth-wicket pair Croft and Jones shared 120 in 19 overs before Bohannon and debutant seamer Liam Hurt added 68 for the seventh inside the innings’ last six overs.

David Willey was the pick of Yorkshire’s bowlers with 2-51 from 10 overs and made the initial breakthrough when Keaton Jennings feathered behind (26-1 in the seventh).

It was the first of three catches in succession for Jonny Tattersall and four in all.

Duanne Olivier had Haseeb Hameed caught behind hooking at the end of his first over before powerful Australian Glenn Maxwell was undone trying to cut an Adil Rashid delivery which wasn’t there for the shot.

Then, in the 23rd over, Lancashire captain Dane Vilas was brilliantly run out by Poysden with a direct hit at the non-striker’s end from short fine-leg.

In reply, Yorkshire raced to 36-0 after four overs, but were reeled in to 42-2 after 10.

Maxwell had captain for the day Adam Lyth – Steve Patterson was rested – well caught by a diving Jennings running around from short third-man before Willey miscued Mahmood to deep mid-wicket.

Kohler-Cadmore and Harry Brook had to be patient as Lancashire squeezed further, the score 86-2 after 20 overs and 87-3 four balls later when Brook was trapped lbw by Matthew Parkinson’s leg-spin.

But Kohler-Cadmore reached a 69-ball fifty with a six as Yorkshire reached halfway at 114-3, needing 198 more.

Ballance later pulled Croft’s off-spin for six to take the target below 150 and reach 50 off 47 balls.

Lancashire felt they ran him out on 59 after a direct hit from Maxwell at the non-striker’s end, only for umpire Tim Robinson to infuriate them by turning it down.

But England Lions quick Mahmood removed them both in successive overs, Kohler-Cadmore (113 balls) bowled and Ballance caught at backward point, to leave the score at 241-5 in the 42nd.

Bresnan then holed out to long-on off Parkinson before Rashid fell to Graham Onions and Mat Pillans to Hurt. Then came the drama at the death.
