Re-Member Monday - Mel

— 28 January 2019

Yorkshire Cricket is regarded as one of the greatest clubs in the world, and as one of the proudest in existence. Established over 150 years ago, the history, tradition and passion of its Members are the main reasons for this. The pride of the Club’s supporters has always been evident.

To celebrate the Club’s fantastic supporters, we bring you a feature looking at memories of some of the White Rose Members. This week we hear from Mel.

When did you first become a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club?

“I became a member in the late 60s but resigned in 1970 when Brian Close was sacked, that I thought was a shocking decision and no way to treat a loyal servant. However, I joined again in the mid 70s and have been a member ever since, despite living in several places in the South of the country over the years.”

What are your first memories of Yorkshire County Cricket Club?

“My first memory of Yorkshire Cricket was in 1953 when my father took me to Scarborough to watch Yorkshire. I was 10 at the time. We had to leave at lunch as I would not stop crying because Len Hutton was out for only 6. He was my hero.”

What is your fondest memory of Yorkshire cricket?

“My fondest memory was when we won the Gillette Cup in 1965 and Geoff Boycott was man of the match scoring a brilliant 146.”

What is your favourite ground and why?

“My favourite ground is Scarborough, where there is always a large and enthusiastic crowd. For the last 19/20 years along with three friends we have stayed in Scarborough for three nights at each Championship fixture.”

Who is your favourite current player and why?

“My favourite current player is Jonny Bairstow. I know we don’t see much of him these days because of his international commitments, but he is exciting to watch and a true team player. Plus, his enthusiasm is infectious. I feel he has been given a raw deal by England over the wicketkeepers role in Sri Lanka this winter.”

Yorkshire supporters are known for being very passionate about their county and cricket team, would you put yourself in that bracket?

“I would say that I am as passionate as the next man when it comes to Yorkshire Cricket, that is highlighted by my long-term membership.”

What are you most looking forward to during the 2019 season?

“I am looking forward to watching the county play at York. The fact that I live in Escrick, the home of The Yorkshire Gentlemen Cricket Club formed on the same day as the county club in 1863, which is only six miles from York Cricket Club it means a shorter journey for the game. This will be the first county game at York and I am sure it will be great occasion.”

Which young player in the current squad do you think will break through next year and why?

“Harry Brook is the player I believe will come good next season. He seems to have the temperament and technique to succeed. In addition his batting is easy on the eye as per Hutton, Boycott, Athey, Moxon and Vaughan.”

What is it about the experience at Emerald Headingley and Scarborough that makes it a good place to visit for you and your family?

“The facilities for members should be first class at Headingley from next year and I have mentioned the plus factor of Scarborough apart from the magnificent views of the cricket from all parts of the ground.”
