Patterson disappointed by Lahore defeat

— 4 October 2018

Steve Patterson says a below par bowling display cost Yorkshire victory in tonight’s Abu Dhabi T20 clash with Lahore.

The Vikings were unable to defend a target of 185 which should have been enough on a used pitch, with Lahore captain Sohail Akhtar opening the batting and smashing a maiden hundred.

Josh Poysden struck and impressed on his white ball debut for the county, earning praise from the skipper.

However, Patterson was largely disappointed, singling himself out.

Patterson also admitted his frustration at the match-turning decision from the umpires to recall Akhtar to the crease on 51 after being given out caught at long-off by Adam Lyth off Poysden.

It was one of those juggling efforts as Lyth tried to circumnavigate the boundary rope.

Patterson explained: “The umpire on the field had heard something through his microphone from the TV umpire and had given him out.

“He (Akhtar) was going off the pitch, but their players were telling him to go back. All of a sudden, we were told it was six.

“I haven’t seen a replay, so I can’t comment too much. But I know our coaches and guys on the side were pretty disappointed by what happened.”

Patterson continued: “I thought we did really well with the bat, and I was really pleased with the score we put on the board. We were confident coming out with the ball.

“We would have liked some early wickets, but it didn’t quite happen.

“Josh Poysden and Josh Shaw bowled beautifully through the middle and pulled it back, but we weren’t quite as good as we should have been with the ball, myself especially. It’s cost us.

“Like their guy, you’d love someone to go on with the bat and get a massive score, but it didn’t quite happen.

“The promising thing is that everyone came in and made a contribution for us.

“I was really pleased with Josh’s performance. He looked right at home and really at ease.

“We know that if we execute our plans like we can do, we win the game.

“It’s a bit disappointing, but promising in the way some of the younger lads played.”

Yorkshire must now hope Hobart beat Lahore tomorrow and then beat the Australians themselves on Saturday morning.

“Hopefully if we win the next game convincingly, we’ll have a chance of going through,” added Patterson. “If Hobart beat Lahore, it’s all to play for. We’d like them to go and do a job and come back strong on Saturday.”
