LIVE BLOG: YORKSHIRE V LANCASHIRE, CC, DAY THREE

— 12 September 2018

Scorecard

Steve Patterson

“It ended up being a good day.

“If you look at how the game’s gone so far, the first day didn’t quite go as we’d have liked.

“I thought we were a bit soft with the bat and got bowled out for 50 to 70 runs short of what was a fair total.

“With them 105-0 at close, you think ‘If we don’t get it right day two, we could be dead and buried’.

“The character we showed on day two with the ball, to bowl them out in two sessions, was fantastic.

“The way Gary and Tom applied themselves from 25 or 30-3 was outstanding.

“Today, we spoke in the dressing room about how big the first hour was. If we lost two or three quick wickets, we’d have been 80 or 90 for five or six.

“But the lads showed composure in tough circumstances. We felt anything over 200 we had a chance with.

“Then the way the lads went about their work (with the ball) in the evening session was outstanding.

“We knew if we started by keeping them dry, we’d create chances. We got Davies early and chipped away before Brooksy and Coady had a mad half hour.

“I’m absolutely delighted at the end of the day to be where we are.
“But we have a lot of work to do in the morning and a professional job to do to try and win the game. Certainly, if you’d have offered me this position at the start of the day, I’d have taken it.”

5.51pm Close. What a stunning end to the day. Lancashire 109-7 chasing 230.

5.29pm Bailey is bowled by Coad. 95-7.

5.19pm Yorkshire ending the day with a bang. Ben Coad bowls Dane Vilas. Lancashire are 87-5!!

4.14pm The bowling from both sides today has been high class, and Yorkshire have started superbly, led by Ben Coad. Lancashire 39-2 in the 15th.

3.37pm Davies gone! He’s been caught behind trying to cut at Coad. 11-1 chasing 230.

Lunch Report

Yorkshire are very much in the hunt for a crucial Specsavers County Championship win over Roses rivals Lancashire at Emerald Headingley.

Their relegation battle hangs in the balance after Yorkshire, trailing by 43 on first innings, advanced from 127-3 overnight to reach lunch on day three at 219-6 from 74 overs, a lead of 176.

South Africa Test left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj picked up two of the three wickets to fall, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Gary Ballance both lbw.

Kohler-Cadmore and Ballance were superb in recovering Yorkshire from 27-3 shortly after tea on day two, and hit 63 and 85 respectively. They shared 148 for the fourth wicket.

Kohler-Cadmore was lbw playing forwards before Ballance fell the same way playing across the line as the score slipped to 192-5 in the 65th over.

At that stage, Yorkshire led by 149. With another 22 added, Tom Bailey had Jonny Tattersall caught behind for 22 as the score fell to 214-6 in the 72nd.

Tim Bresnan is unbeaten on eight and Matthew Waite four.

10.31am The ECB have just announced their players availability for the rest of the season. Bairstow, Rashid and Root all unavailable for the rest of the season.

10.30am Play has started under sunny skies. A couple of runs for Tom Kohler-Cadmore off the third ball of the day from Tom Bailey. 129-3, leading by 86.

Good morning from Emerald Headingley, where it is a dry but largely overcast morning ahead of day three of this topsy turvy Roses match.

We are pretty much even at the halfway stage of this match.

Yorkshire are 127-3, leading by 84 with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Gary Ballance unbeaten and having brought up their century partnership in the final over last night.

If Yorkshire can get through the first hour this morning without too much damage, they will have a definite advantage in this their penultimate home game of 2018.

Yorkshire were superb yesterday, particularly with the ball before battling hard with the bat.

Let’s hope for more of the same today.
