REPORT: DAY FOUR NOTTINGHAMSHIRE VS YORKSHIRE

— 7 September 2018

Scorecard

Tom Kohler-Cadmore posted his first Specsavers County Championship century for Yorkshire as they secured a high-scoring draw against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Kohler-Cadmore, 24, hit a patient 106 to go alongside Gary Ballance’s 104 earlier in the match as the White Rose responded to Notts’ 448 all out with 498.

The hosts finished on 93-1 in their second innings, leading by 43. The players shook hands at 4.20pm.

This was Yorkshire’s first time to 400 this season and their highest score in the Championship since posting 557-6 in an innings win over Surrey at Emerald Headingley in May 2016.

The first seven overs of day four saw Yorkshire secure a fifth batting bonus point by advancing from 357-5 overnight to 403-6 in 110 overs.

Kohler-Cadmore and Tim Bresnan, who later made his way to 80, quickly advanced against seamers Harry Gurney and Matt Milnes and then the left-arm spin of Samit Patel, who finished with 6-114 in batsman-friendly conditions.

But, upon Kohler-Cadmore’s departure to Patel with two balls remaining in the 110th over (395-6), it was left to Matthew Waite to hit his first two balls for four to get Yorkshire over the line.

It may be that the point is not significant come the end of the season, but you never know. Plenty of sides have had their fate sealed by a point in recent times.

In all, second-bottom Yorkshire claimed 12 from this fixture, only their third draw of the season.

And they head into Monday’s blockbuster Roses clash with fellow strugglers Lancashire at Headingley just one point behind them with three to play. The Red Rose only have two games remaining, making their need for victory greater.

Yorkshire are expected to have seamers Steve Patterson and Ben Coad available having missed the last three Championship matches with finger and side injuries.

Kohler-Cadmore reached his fifth Championship career century – but his first for Yorkshire – off 225 balls as he advanced from 92 not out overnight.

He completed a 61-run stand with Bresnan, who also posted his highest score of the season.

Bresnan reached 50 off 82 balls before lunch and went on to share 74 for the seventh wicket with Waite, who added 43 to add to his three first-innings wickets.

Waite hit Patel for two leg-side sixes before offering up a simple catch to short cover off the leading edge in the same over as Yorkshire fell to 469-7 in the 133rd over.

His fifth wicket was that of White Rose debutant Mathew Pillans, trapped lbw for eight in the final over of the morning – 484-8 in the 139th.

Rain delayed the start of the afternoon by 10 minutes, meaning a loss of three overs and a total of 68 in the match.

The former England man then had Jack Brooks caught at silly mid-off eight runs later before Bresnan dragged Jake Libby’s part-time off-spin to mid-on with Yorkshire two short of 500.

That left them with 46 overs of bowling to before close, but only 31 were bowled.

Yorkshire debutant Pillans bowled a lively eight-over opening spell before tea, rapping opener Ben Slater on the gloves with a short ball.

Slater was later bowled around his legs by Josh Poysden as the score fell to 91-1. Poysden bowled 10 encouraging overs.
