REPORT: DAY FOUR YORKSHIRE VS SOMERSET

— 1 September 2018

Scorecard

Yorkshire lost a costly five wickets for 30 either side of lunch on day four as they slipped to a Specsavers County Championship defeat to Somerset at Emerald Headingley, by 224 runs.

Faced with a victory target of 419, the White Rose started the day on 8-2 and were bowled out for 194 with a little over 26 overs remaining in the day.

Their hopes of a draw were significantly boosted by a third-wicket stand of 90 between nightwatchman Josh Shaw and Kane Williamson through all but 10 minutes of the morning session.

They took the score to 94 before Shaw, with a career best 42 to his name, was trapped lbw by Lewis Gregory.

Unfortunately, 45 minutes into the afternoon, the hosts had slipped to 124-7, with the Overton twins equally sharing the next four wickets, including New Zealand captain Williamson caught behind off Craig for an innings high 51 in the first over of the afternoon.

Williamson was undone by extra bounce.

Yorkshire took the game beyond tea through a stoic ninth-wicket stand of 45 between David Willey and Matthew Fisher as they advanced from 143-8.

But Jamie Overton claimed the last two wickets, Fisher and Jack Brooks, to finish with 4-25.

Second-placed Somerset won their third straight match to cut the gap to leaders Surrey to 32 points.

Somerset also won their third straight match against Yorkshire dating back to Scarborough last year – the first time that has happened.

More importantly, Yorkshire are now second bottom in Division One.

Assuming Hampshire lose at Essex later today, which looks likely, Yorkshire would be one point adrift.

Yorkshire’s next match is against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, starting on Tuesday.

Kiwi opener Jeet Raval will debut in place of his international captain Williamson, whose short-term overseas deal has come to an end.
