Vikings lose out in Chesterfield nail-biter

Scorecard

Matt Critchley smashed the 19 needed off the last over from Tim Bresnan as Derbyshire snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Yorkshire in a thrilling Vitality Blast finish at Chesterfield.

The Vikings lost their third match in seven North Group outings by five wickets with a ball to spare as the hosts chased 167, with England Lions all-rounder Critchley their hero with 38 not out off 17 balls at the death.

Spin duo Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq claimed 2-19 and 2-28 as the Falcons were tied down through the middle of a chase which faltered after a bright start.

Following a rain delayed start by 35 minutes, Yorkshire elected to bat first and posted 166-8, a competitive total on a slow pitch despite the fact they should have accrued more given a position of strength at 109-2 in the 12th over.

They lost six wickets for 53 to halt their momentum, with seamer Ravi Rampaul starring with 4-19 from his four overs with the new ball and at the death.

David Willey top-scored with 55 from 44 balls for the Vikings, hitting eight fours and a six.

Yorkshire’s innings started in blistering fashion, with Tom Kohler-Cadmore hitting two fours and a six off the first three balls from Wayne Madsen’s off-spinners.

But he fell with the first ball of the second to a smart low catch at cover by Critchley off Rampaul as the score fell to 15-1.

Rampaul also removed Adam Lyth in the fifth over (37-2) before Willey and Kane Williamson advanced the innings confidently with a 72 stand in 7.2 overs.

Both men cleared the ropes with some ease, including a huge Willey blow over deep mid-wicket off Rampaul in the 12th over as the score moved to 109-2.

Unfortunately, however, Williamson (35) pulled Pakistan overseas seamer Wahab Riaz to deep mid-wicket with the first ball of the 13th – the first of four wickets to fall for 38 as the score slipped to 147-6 in the 18th.

Willey reached 50 off 37 balls, but he slapped a Riaz slower ball bouncer to mid-off.

Rampaul then struck twice in a superb final over of the innings, delayed slightly by another short rain delay, which only went for three singles.

The Falcons also made a bright start to their reply, reaching 43-1 after five, with Rafiq getting Calum MacLeod caught at deep mid-wicket with the penultimate ball of the fifth.

But that was the first of two wickets in four balls as Madsen was run out following a mix-up with Billy Godleman, who tried to pinch a quick single to Williamson running around from cover to mid-off (44-2).

Rashid then struck with his fourth ball, in the eighth over, to trap Anuj Dal lbw as the score fell to 60-3 in the eighth before rain took the players off again with the score at 72-3 after 9.1.

Rafiq struck again in the 13th when he had home captain Gary Wilson stumped (95-4), and the rate climbed quickly despite Godleman reaching 50. With six overs remaining, the Falcons needed 64.

Rashid bowled Hardus Viljoen in the 15th as the game swung Yorkshire’s way as the target became 61 off five overs, 53 off four and 42 off three.

Godleman and Critchley kept their side alive, but Steve Patterson only conceded eight off a fine penultimate over to leave Bresnan to defend 19 off the last.

Unfortunately, it did not happen as Critchley hit a two followed by two sixes and two fours. Godleman finished unbeaten on 71 off 57.

These two sides meet again at Emerald Headingley on Monday (6.30pm).
