On a cool and cloudy day Yorkshire won the toss and asked Somerset to bat first. However they added 120 before Byrom was caught by Thompson from the bowling of Carver for 48 and lunch arrived with the hosts on 123-1.
The afternoon session saw the addition of 190 runs from 39 overs for the loss of four further wickets, at tea 313-5. Opener Hose was caught by Wainman from Shaw’s bowling for 83 from 126 balls including 16 fours.
Barrow went on to make 123 from 141 balls with 17 fours when he was the seventh wicket to fall.
Josh Shaw then wrapped up their innings with three wickets in an over to finish with figures of 9.5-4-25-4. There were also three wickets for 81 from 18 overs for Jack Leaning.
We were left to negotiate 15 overs but lost both Andrew Hodd and Jack Leaning both for 0 from four balls. We ended the first day on 31-2 with skipper, Will Rhodes 17 not out and Harry Brook unbeaten on 10.
