U17s: So near but yet so far

— 6 August 2015

Yorkshire could not take the final Derbyshire at Repton School yesterday and so failed to qualify for the Semi-Finals of the 2015 U17 County Championship. Instead, Derbyshire qualified for that stage for the first time ever.

Derbyshire began on 43/2 with the danger man (Ryan Bramwell) already established on 26*. But an audacious stroke was his downfall as an attempted lift over the slips merely landed in the gloves of Jonathan Read behind the stumps.
But a fourth wicket partnership of 76 and then another of 82 for the fifth wicket meant that, at 209/5, Yorkshire still had some work to do. But then three more wickets fell for the addition of just 51 runs and Yorkshire were on top at tea as Derbyshire had slipped to 261/8.

But yet another partnership gradually shifted the advantage as Sonczak and Qadri added 75 for the ninth wicket. Sonczak was eventually dismissed by Ed Morrison with 4.5 overs remaining.
But the last wicket pair could not be split and that was that as far as Yorkshire were concerned.

Mustapha Raffique finished with 3/52 and James Logan with 3/70, while Ed Morrison, James Brown and Matthew Taylor each had one success.
