Another surprisingly sunny day in our year saw a middle of the table clash as Cleethorpes travel to Leeds. With Cleethorpes opting to bat first, the Academy got off to a great start in the field as Waite claimed the first victim of the match without conceding any runs.
The new pair made a partnership of 49 before Brook caught Warwick in second slip. Mansfield and returning player Osmond kept the birds off the outfield, creating a splendid partnership of 84 before 89 before Mansfield (54) was caught by Ainsley at mid-wicket.
Another decent partnership of 30 between Osmond and Sunley put the Academy on the back foot until Ainsley caught Osmond (79) with a forward diving catch at mid-off to end his innings. This reduced Cleethorpes to 168 for 4.
Within the next over, spin bowler Logan saw off two middle order batsmen in his double wicket maiden. The consecutive over saw Thompson claim another, followed by Logan as Warner dived at mid-off to bring Cleethorpes down to 178 for 8.
A few overs later and Thompson (4/28) received his fourth wicket with another catch by Warner at deep mid-wicket.
Logan (4/30) closed the innings with a straight LBW resulting in a chasuble target of 186.
Cleethorpes took an early wicket at 14 to put Callis and Mosun Hussain (82*) together at the crease. With an impressive partnership of 171 including 18 17 four’s and 4 sixes across mid-on and mid-off the side had almost reached their goal when Callis (72) was caught at cover. Waite came to score the remaining two runs to carry the side across the finishing line.
A great win for a team on the up! Can they repeat their performance tomorrow in the Black Sheep Trophy at Treeton?
