Academy: League Cup - Yorkshire v Appleby Frodingham

— 29 June 2015

The second day of the weekend took the Academy over to Appleby Frodingham for round two of the Premier League Cup. The home side won the toss and put the Academy in to bat.

Scorecard

An early wicket by bowler Watson put the Academy on the back foot. Ainsley and Hussain picked up the pace to reach a score of 50 before Hussain was dismissed by seam bowler Fowler.

Waite came to join Ainsley in the quest for runs. A terrific partnership through 26 overs took the Academy to 184 before Waite (70) was run out after stumbling half way down the wicket. The partnership involved 13 fours and 1 six which took advantage of the full field.

Seconds later Ainsley (87) fell to Fowler making 188 for 4. Thompson (59*) continued the success of the previous team mates to take the score to 277 for 6. Hopefully a winning score.
With a change in the bowling line up, Nathan Firn opened and claimed the first victim reducing Frodingham to 19 for 1. Tight fielding all round kept the scores low and built the pressure ready for the spin bowlers.

Left arm spin bowler Logan came to replace Thompson (0/15). He took his first wicket within his first over with help from Callis at long mid on.

A few overs later Logan claimed another in the exact same way as his previous wicket, another catch at long mid on by Callis.
Within 6 overs, Logan had claimed another two victims reducing Appleby Frodingham to 117 for 5. The next over saw left arm spin bowler Carver get in on the action with a caught behind by Read.

Overseas player Scott came to assist Heath in his hope of keeping the game going. A good partnership of 53 saw Heath reach 90 before being bowled out on the first ball of Thompson’s returning spell. A run out by Carver a few balls later reduced Frodingham to 171 for 8.

With a mix in bowling changes, Appleby Frodingham lasted the 50 overs to a total of 212 with their overseas Scott making 41 not out.

A good game was played by the Academy boys and hopefully the feeling will continue to next week’s game against Rotherham.

The round of the League Cup will be played at home against Barnsley as they take a 10 wicket win over Hull today. The date is yet to be decided.
