T20: Lancashire 2nd XI v Yorkshire 2nd XI

— 8 May 2015

Yorkshire began their 2nd XI T20 programme at Northop Hall CC in North Wales yesterday against the old enemy with, unfortunately, the same result as in previous years.

The Umpires had arranged with Lords to begin at 10.45 (45 minutes early) to try to beat the forecast downpour. Lancashire won the toss and asked Yorkshire to take first knock in game 1 (pre-lunch). Ryan Gibson (22 from 12 deliveries; two fours and one six) injected early momentum into proceedings but, once he was out, we were soon 65/5 and the boundaries had dried up.

Enter Matthew Waite (48* from 35 deliveries; four fours and two sixes). This splendid innings ensured a modicum of respectability in the Yorkshire total of 142/7 from the full allocation of 20 overs.

But Lancashire knew well enough that, with rain around, all they had to do was to remain ahead of Duckworth-Lewis and hope that the required five overs could be completed before the heavens opened. They were but the rain was already falling as the Umpires finally took the players off after seven overs with the home side 45/1.

Richard Pyrah (1/4 from two overs) had dismissed Hassan Hameed but the second wicket never came so Lancashire were just three runs ahead on D/L at the interruption.

And that was how it stayed as the rain was much heavier after an excellent lunch and Game 1 was duly abandoned with the home side claiming the two points. No internet connection was possible and so the full scorecard is given below.

Game two never started as the weather forecast had proved correct, even if the heaviest stuff had arrived later than we had been led to believe. Each team took one point from the abandoned game.

And so we departed to a two-hour journey home that took three and a half hours thanks to heavy motorway traffic and atrocious driving conditions.
