Academy defeat Doncaster by 35 runs

— 19 April 2015

The opening game of the season saw Yorkshire Academy away to Doncaster Town. As the sun shone, a coin was tossed and the Academy decided to bat.

Opening for the Academy was E Callis and B Ainsley, however Callis made an early exit at 6 runs for 1 off 4 overs.

Danish Hussain (28) and Ben Ainsley (37) soon pick up the pace with lovely shots to wide long on. The pair were making great headway taking the team to 68 for 1 before Ainsley was caught by the Doncaster keeper, Day-Tennant making this his second for the day.

Townsend (59 for 3) and Attenborough (36 for 3) bowled well throughout their 17 overs reducing the Academy to 124 for 7 with Day-Tennant making two other appearances.

Ed Barnes (28) made a surge at number 8, taking the side to 158 all out after 52 overs by taking risky singles which eventually gave him his exit ticket.

The home side looked to be going strong making 17 off the first 5 overs after losing opener Cox early to Waite (11 for 1). The home side continued slowly until Academy called for a change of bowling.

Guy (37) saw off the new bowler Barnes in his first spell (11 for 1) and Firn (21 for 1) whilst James Logan began from the north side. The young spinner (Logan) made 26 for 2 in his spell of 17 overs including 8 maidens to put Doncaster on the back foot.

With some tight fielding Doncaster pushed the score to 98 for 6 before Barnes appeared for his second spell. Bowling three consecutive batsmen Barnes finished on 28 for 4 whilst Thompson finished the game by taking ownership of the final wicket. Doncaster Town made 123 all out after 48 overs.

At the beginning of the day, it looked bleak for the young Academy side but the team kept their cool in the hot field to bring home the first win!
