2nd XI: Young MCC v Yorkshire (Day Two)

— 14 August 2014

Yorkshire`s bowlers built on the splendid work by the batsmen the previous day to establish a first innings lead of 101, which had been extended to 159 with seven second innings wickets in hand by the close of play on the second day.

But it was not all plain sailing as the bowlers originally had to contend with the MCC Captain, Chris Piesley, who set his stall out to bat long, as he and Liam Gough played out four consecutive maidens at the start of the day.

After that, however, the batsmen gradually picked up the pace as Piesley was particularly severe on the persevering James Logan, hitting him for two straight sixes, each of which necessitate a ball change. But, by lunch, Yorkshire had removed Gough, Arthurton and Graham, to leave the home side wobbling on 126/4.

More good work followed until, eventually, a lead of 01 had been established with Wainman (4/55) and Ryan Gibson (3/39) leading the way. James Logan chipped in with 2/60 from 23 overs, a noble riposte after the Piesley assault. Nathan Firn had the other scalp and two catches, the second of which arrived via the rear portions of Eliot Callis at short leg.

So Yorkshire began the final session of the day with 25 overs to bat and, as usual, did not manage to negotiate this passage of play unscathed.

Callis and Ainsley were each caught behind and Ryan Gibson`s lean spell with the bat continued as Palash Joshi nipped on through his defences. But Dan Hodgson and Jordan Thompson played out the remaining overs to see their side home on 58/3 with Thompson playing some particularly hard-hit shots in his unbeaten 20.
