2nd XI: Yorkshire miss out against Leicestershire

— 8 August 2014

So Yorkshire duly lost their 2nd XI Championship match against Leicestershire at York CC by 8 wickets. With so many young players, many new, or relatively new, to 2nd XI cricket it was always going to be difficult to gain much from this game, given that our opponents have already won the 2nd XI T20 in 2014, are in the Trophy Semi-Final and lead the Championship and that the majority of the team had already played 1t XI cricket, some quite regularly.

Yorkshire began the day on 145/8 with Firn and Logan at the crease. But their recent rescue acts could not be repeated this time and Nathan Firn was dismissed for the first time in his short 2nd XI career and Moin Ashraf followed soon afterwards for the addition of just six runs.

This meant that Leicestershire needed 150 to win and had a little matter of 86 overs in which to score them. They went off at over three an over and raised the tempo to just under four per over before Yorkshire finally struck just after lunch when Michael Thornely mistimed one from James Wainman to give Nathan Firn his first catch in 2nd XI cricket.

A second success followed with just a few required as Ned Eckersley tried to hit Logan out of the ground to be held on the long-on boundary by James Wainman. Ben Raine scored the required 14 runs in just nine deliveries and that was that.

It had seemed from the start of the final day that things would be difficult for Yorkshire as the wicket appeared to have gone to sleep and the Yorkshire bowlers were never able to stem the flow of runs.
