Last week England cricketers Gary Ballance and Jonny Bairstow made a surprise visit to St Chad’s Broomfield CC at their weekly training session.
The Yorkshire pair stunned the local club who had originally been told the ECB would be filming a training session for potential new members – but were unaware that this would involve Ballance and Bairstow. The duo batted in the nets, led fielding drills and passed on tips to the large youth section of the club that had attended training.
Gary Ballance said: “It was really good fun and always nice to get the chance to come down to a local club. There are some good players here in the nets and I was out caught on the boundary off a leg spinner! I was a bit nervous coming down but everyone was friendly. There are players of all ages and they all really seem to love their cricket”.
James Bacon, Club Secretary, St Chad’s Broomfield CC added: “It was a fantastic surprise for them to attend. The kids absolutely loved it especially having an opportunity to ask England cricketers questions and bowl at them. In the middle of the season it’s been a real morale boost and has injected enthusiasm back into the club.”
St Chad’s, based a few miles from Headingley, is one of the region’s oldest clubs boasting a 130 year history and currently running 12 senior and junior teams.
