Yorkshire 50s secured their place in the quarter finals of the ECB 50+ Championship with an 81 run victory over Cambridgeshire 50+ at Acomb CC on Sunday.
Put in to bat by the visitors the home side scored at a brisk pace with opener Kevin Bradley (Clifton Alliance) moving serenely to 76 – 12 boundary 4’s and a 6 before being caught off his first false shot .
He was ably supported by Colin Frank (Pickering) in a 112 second wicket stand before Frank became 5th man out also caught by Benson off Ennew for 74. At 222 off 37 overs the scoring rate was picked up by Steve Wales (North Leeds) (13) Colin Chadwick (Pateley Bridge) (25no) and Steve Booth (Collingham) (26no) before the innings was closed on 286 for 6. Booth’s 6 scoring shots produced 5 boundary four 4’s and a six as the visitors bowlers toiled somewhat in the hot weather.
In reply Cambridgeshire made a spirited attempt at the huge total marked by a partnership of 91 captain and opening bat Neil Gadsby (54) and Phil Stayley (62.
Once the pair were seperated the middle order fell away to the bowling of Kevin Watson (Brook Walton) and left arm spinner Steve Booth both ending with identical figures of 3 for 40 also abely supported by Simon Bagnall (Adwalton) and vice-captain Rob Keywood (Warley) both bowled good areas with a wicket a piece, the innings closed on 205 for 8 off the 45 overs.
Yorkshire maintained their excellent team ethic marked by their usual high standard in the field.
The Quarter final at York CC will be against Essex 50+ (winners over Oxfordshire) on Sunday 10th August.
