MATCH PREVIEW: Yorkshire Vikings v Sri Lanka A

— 30 July 2014

Yorkshire’s 50-over friendly against Sri Lanka A tomorrow will provide a number of first-team hopefuls with the opportunity to impress the club’s hierarchy as they bid for more senior cricket.

  • The White Rose county take a break from competition cricket to take on the tourists, who are themselves warming up for a forthcoming triangular one-day series also involving New Zealand A and England Lions. Jonny Bairstow will play for the Lions in that series.

Although a number of regulars will be fielded, the likes of wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd and pace man Moin Ashraf will come into the team.

For Hodd, it is a warm-up for a run in the Royal London one-day Cup side whilst Bairstow is with the Lions.

Hodd will play four Group A fixtures, starting with next Tuesday’s trip to face Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

  • The Sri Lankans have brought a reasonably experienced squad to the UK, including a handful of players who have played at full international level. Leg-spinning all-rounder Seekkuge Prasanna is the only member of their party to have played a Test match, however.

They are captained by one-day international batsman Ashan Priyanjan.

“It gives us an opportunity to have a look at some of the lads who haven’t been playing first-team cricket,” said the county’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon after yesterday’s Royal London defeat against Gloucestershire at Headingley.

“It will be a good game and test for the lads to bounce back. It will also be a test for the other lads coming in against a good team.

“They’re a good team, Sri Lanka A, and it will be good for us to judge the lads currently out of the first team against them.”

Moin Ashraf, Elliot Callis, Ben Coad, Ryan Gibson, Andrew Hodd (Wicket Keeper), Daniel Hodgson, Jack Leaning, Alex Lees (Captain), Adam Lyth, Adil Rashid, James Wainman, Matthew Waite
