Magnificent Seven for Yorkshire’s Mr Reliable

— 21 July 2014

Yorkshire bowler Ryan Sidebottom showed why he is still one of the best bowlers on the county circuit.

At 36 the Yorkshire warhorse produced outstanding figures of 7 for 44 in energy-zapping conditions at a muggy North Marine Road. This was the left-armers best performance with the ball since he took 7 for 37 against Somerset at Headingley since 2011. Many in the sun drenched crowd were willing him on for his eighth victim but were baffled to see him taken off from the firing line. Later the former England man confirmed that he had given everything and had no energy left to carry on.

“I was battling towards the end,” said Sidebottom. “I had nothing left in the tank and said to Galey (Andrew Gale, Yorkshire captain) take me off.

  • “It’s always nice to contribute, especially at an important time. They were getting on top of us. Malan and Simpson put on a really good partnership there, and we were staring down the barrel of what was looking like 300 or 350.

“To get those vitals wickets at a telling stage was really nice. It’s a big day for us coming up. There’s still plenty in the wicket, so if we bat well and get 250 or 300, we’re in with a chance.

“I’ve bowled well before and not taken wickets, so it was nice to contribute, especially here at what is a special place. It’s always well supported by the Yorkshire fans, and to be up on that board means a lot with dad up there. To get another seven, I’m delighted.
