Yorkshire 50s remain unbeaten with victory over Derbyshire

— 22 June 2014

On a hot sunny summers day Yorkshire travelled to the Alvaston & Boulton CC in Derby to take on Derbyshire 50s and came away with a comfortable nine-wicket victory. The home side were put in to bat and made a steady, if slowish, start against accurate medium paced bowling, reaching 46 before losing their first wicket.

The introduction of spinners Steve Booth (Collingham) with excellent figures of 2 for 7 of his 9 overs and Colin Chadwick (Pateley Bridge) 3 for 22 off 9 caused a middle order collapse to 64 for 6 but M Mason (29) and P Dearne (34) restored a measure of respectability with a stand of 54 enabling as final score of 159 for 8 to be reached in the 45 overs.

In reply Yorkshire raced to a 9-wicket victory in 24 overs. Kevin Bradley (Dunnington) with 33 being the only wicket to fall in an opening partnership of 45. Colin Franks (Pickering) then joined opener Richard Sykes (Acomb) and both made light work of reaching a winning 160 total, Sykes 51 no and Franks 68no including 10 × 4’s and one six.

  • Colin Frank (bat raised) and Richard Sykes doing the business for Yorkshire.

Once again athleticism in the field allied to strong batting and tight bowling epitomised the Yorkshire approach which stands them in good stead for more challenging upcoming games starting next Wednesday June 25th against Lancashire 50’s at Studley Royal CC.
