Lancashire won the toss on a bright and sunny morning (honestly) and, invited Yorkshire to bat first.
And after just seven overs, Yorkshire were reeling at 21/4, with Callis, Tattersall, Hodd and Rhodes all dismissed. According to the Umpires, the pitch was talking during these initial overs and former Zimbabwe opening bowler Kyle Jarvis and the homegrown Gavin Griffiths took full advantage as the ball seamed all over the place.
But then began a most stirring and courageous rearguard action as Dan Hodgson (22) and Oliver Robinson (62) added 75 for the fifth before Hodgson was dismissed as keeper Gowers claimed another catch. Rain arrived on the stroke of lunch with Yorkshire on 105/5.
The re-start was delayed and play did not resume until 2.28 pm when Robinson and Rafiq added 34 for the sixth wicket before Robinson finally succumbed to the only successful LBW appeal of the day, although that did not stop any of the bowlers peppering the eardrums of the umpires with frequent concerted and resounding efforts.
Rafiq and Ryan Gibson had added another 19 when a mighty thunderstorm arrived, accompanied by several flashes of lightening. By the time this had ended, the groundstaff had given up all hopes of getting the ground ready for a restart so play was abandoned for the day.
