Yorkshire overs 50s get off to a winning start

— 23 May 2014

Following the disappointment of the opening fixture against Lancashire being abandoned due to bad weather (rearranged later in the summer) Yorkshire 50+ got their ECB 50+ County Championship Group matches underway with a comfortable victory over Nottinghamshire at Thoresby Colliery CC by eight wickets.

Yorkshire, with new captain Steve Wales (North Leeds) and four debutants in Kevin Watson (Brook Walton), Martin Wilson (Wath), Steve Thompson (Pudsey St Lawrence) and Ashley Morton (Anston), were all keen to impress.

Losing the toss, Yorkshire bowled tightly and fielded superbly on a flat wicket to limit the Notts batsmen to 131 all out in 44 overs. Rob Keywood (Warley) bowled nine overs only conceding nine runs and was ably supported by Colin Chadwick (Pateley Bridge) four for 37, Wilson three for 20 and Wales two for 29. Only Douglas, for Nottinghamshire, with 41 made any impression for the home side.

In reply, Yorkshire cruised to victory in 28 overs with opener Richard Sykes (Acomb) batting superbly for 51 not out and well supported by Mike Watkin (Hull) 47 not out – a knock which included nine boundaries.

Yorkshire are next in action against Northumberland at Masham CC on Wednesday May 28 2014, 1.30pm start.
