Vikings defeat Yorkshire League XI at Abbeydale

— 20 May 2014

Adam Lyth produced some spectacular hitting to see Yorkshire home by four wickets after suffering a scare against a Yorkshire League Select XI.

The Vikings had been in a bit of trouble at 75-4 when chasing down a target of 184-5, before Lyth and Will Rhodes put on a partnership of 65 to all but see their side home.

The Select XI had posted a very competitive total in perfect batting conditions, with the sun out and the boundaries brought in their batsmen made hay against the Yorkshire attack.
Although Ryan Sidebottom dismissed Eliot Callis early on, the bowlers were under pressure as James Moorhouse and Jonathon Trower entertained the crowd – one spectator leapt spectacularly to take a catch in the crowd after Trower had cleared the ropes.

  • James Wainman took a wicket early on in his spell as Moorhouse skied a pull to Lyth who made no mistake, bringing brother of Joe, Billy Root to the crease.

After reaching 50-2 in the powerplay, the batsmen rotated the striker before Root showed his class with a big six over long on before a brilliant reverse sweep off the bowling of Azeem Rafiq went all the way to move him on to 26.

The introduction of Rhodes quickly saw an end to the enterprising innings of Root and brought former Yorkshire player Simon Guy to the crease.

Some excellent hitting from Guy and Trower pushed the score past 100 before Trower finally departed for 61, caught at long on by Alex Lees off the bowling of Rafiq.

Guy and another former Yorkie Simon Widdup hit the Select XI past 150, with Guy putting the ball through the windscreen of a bewildered spectator’s car in a rapid innings of 43 from just 21 balls. Oliver Robinson was the most economical bowler, going at less than a run a ball in his four overs, finishing with 0-23 as Yorkshire were set 185 to win.

In reply Lees and Andrew Hodd opened up and got the innings off to a good start. 36 runs had been taken off the first four overs with Hodd looking particularly fluent before seeing his middle stump sent flying by Shazad Rana, as he fell for 18.

Lees played some eye-catching drives to reach 37 before being caught in the deep after trying to hit the spin of Ali Jahangir into the car park.

Yorkshire began to fall behind the required rate and after Dan Hodgson and Gary Balance fell with the score on 75 after 10 overs, leaving 110 required in 60 balls.

Rhodes and Lyth began sedately before picking up the pace as the required run rate crept up to 12.

Lyth was dropped on just 23 and it proved costly as he went on to make a match-winning contribution in a dramatic finish.
Rhodes had departed for a well-made 39 to bring in Robinson who played a reverse ramp shot for four before depositing a huge six over square leg.

This started a run of four sixes in as many balls as Lyth smashed the next three out of the park to put the game firmly in Yorkshire’s grasp. Robinson fell for 11 but another Lyth boundary saw the team home by four wickets as he finished with 54 not out from just 25 balls, with 5 × 4s and 3 × 6s.
