Yorkshire v Northamptonshire: Day 3

— 22 April 2014

Yorkshire managed to take four wickets during today’s rain-affected third day as their pursuit of an LV= County Championship victory over Northamptonshire at Headingley remained on course.

Inclement weather meant the loss of 47 overs from the day’s allotted 96 as Northants, asked to follow-on in reply to Yorkshire’s 459-9 declared, reached 148-4 from 49 overs of their second innings.

Ahead of tomorrow’s fourth day, Northants trail by 216 having been bowled out for 94 in their first innings.

Yorkshire’s best spell of the day came in its final 14 overs after play had resumed at 6pm with Northants on 118-2. Jack Brooks struck twice, including the prize wicket of former Tyke James Middlebrook for 63.

There was a 25-minute period of play this morning, which saw the visitors reach 15-0 after six overs, before the players remained off the field for nearly three hours.

When play resumed at 2.15pm, another 29 overs were possible before the day’s second break, in which time Ryan Sidebottom struck twice.

He had Stephen Peters caught behind by Andrew Hodd for eleven in the ninth over of the innings and Kyle Coetzer caught behind for 39 in the 34th, the last before tea.

Middlebrook was Northants’ standout performer with 63 at the top of the order – his highest score against his first county.

Middlebrook and Coetzer, who flicked Liam Plunkett for six over mid-wicket, shared a watchful 89 in 25 overs for the second wicket.

Play resumed again at 6pm following a 75-minute break.

Gary Ballance had to leave the field after cutting a finger on his right hand trying to take a slip catch which dropped short in the first over after the restart before Middlebrook reached 50 off 112 balls.

And with Northants on 132, Brooks trapped Matt Spriegel lbw to leave the visitors three down in the 41st over. He then had Middlebrook caught behind as the score slipped to 145-4 in the 46th.

Rob Newton and night-watchman Maurice Chambers will resume tomorrow morning.

First it was the weather which frustrated Yorkshire. Next it was the Northamptonshire top order.

When play resumed at 2.15pm during the third afternoon of the LV= County Championship match at Headingley, the visitors advanced from 15-0 after six overs to 114-2 from 34 overs.

Ryan Sidebottom claimed the only two wickets when he had Stephen Peters caught behind in the ninth over, leaving the score at 24-1, and Kyle Coetzer the same way – 113-2.

James Middlebrook and Coetzer shared a second-wicket stand of 89. Middlebrook will resume this evening on 45. There are still 36 overs left in the day.

Yorkshire have been frustrated by the weather in their pursuit of victory against Northamptonshire at Headingley this morning.

Only six overs of play have been possible following rain, with Northants reaching 15-0 in their second innings having been asked to follow-on.

There was only 25 minutes of play. Spinners Kane Williamson and Adil Rashid were both employed in poor light.
