Yorkshire`s form and fortunes took a turn for the better today in Nottingham as the weather turned sunny and the batting turned productive to register a four-wicket win over their Trent-based rivals.
Yorkshire won the toss for the first time this season and asked Nottinghamshire to take first knock. They had an early breakthrough a Moin Ashraf had Michael Cross, now a Scottish international, caught behind with only 13 scored.
But it was to be their only success as Sam Kelsall (58) and Hassan Azad (57) proceeded to add 107 from just 103 deliveries to establish a very firm base at 120/2 with 20 overs remaining. At that time, a total of 270 was n the cards for the home side. But apart from Sam Wood`s 45, no other batsman could really score the necessary big one to bat Yorkshire out of the game.
Azem Rafiq and Moin Ashraf each had a couple of wickets and Ashraf also contributed to a run-out. Other scalps went to Matthew Fisher, Josh Shaw and Jack Leaning and a final total of 247/8, while decent, was not as many as it might have been.
In any run-chase, a solid start is essential and Jonathan Tattersall (72) and Eliot Callis (78) certainly provided that as they added 146 before being parted in just 103 minutes. Dan Hodgson followed that up with 42 and Will Rhodes 28 before Richard Pyrah and Josh Shaw secured the few run required to register our first win of the season in exactly 49 overs.
This was a splendid batting display and shows, once again, that when all the parts of the 2nd XI function together, they are a decent side in the making.
