Seconds lose out to Glamorgan in Cardiff

— 8 April 2014

Unfortunately, the 2nd XI began their season with a defeat at the hands of their Welsh counterparts by 4 wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis system after two rain-beaks in Yorkshire`s innings had reduced the game to 45 overs per side.

  • Glamorgan won the toss and invited Yorkshire to bat first on a slow track that gave more encouragement to the seamers rather than the batsmen. Yorkshire were soon 28/3 with Tattersall, Hodgson and Leaning all gone. But Eliot Callis and Will Rhodes then proceeded to add 74 from 67 deliveries for the fourth wicket to wrest back the initiative.

But once they were parted at 102, more wickets fell regularly and the momentum was lost. Yorkshire had slipped to 128/8 before Ben Coad at number 10 in the order joined number 9 Josh Shaw and the duly added a more-then-useful 3 with lots of singles and some shots that belied their lowly starting positions.

Eventually, Yorkshire were dismissed for 164 in the final over on a wicket that was never easy and a sluggish outfield that never gave full value for good shots.
And then Ben Coad began with two quick wickets to reduce Glamorgan to 2/2. Richard Pyrah then chipped in with two more and the home side were 38/4.

But then two hard-fought partnerships sung the game inexorably the way of the Welsh as first Lawlor and Mellor added 57 for the fifth wicket, to be followed by Lawlor and Knight adding another 64 for the sixth wicket to take their side to the brink of victory.

They had four wickets and 19 deliveries to pare when victory was finally achieved.
While an internet connection was quickly established on the ground, the TCS Live Scores facility refused to work at all for the whole game so the scorecard is reproduced below.
