Kevin C Armitage Scholarship Unveiled

— 14 October 2013

On Monday 14th October 2013 a new plaque was unveiled in the Members’ Long Room, commemorating and celebrating the life of a long standing Yorkshire County Cricket Club member.

Kevin Armitage followed Yorkshire across the country, along with his devoted wife Marjorie.  They were life long supporters of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and occasional Yorkshire Pride Lottery winners.

After his death, Marjorie contacted Jane Ferguson at the Yorkshire Pride Lottery to discuss Kevin’s wishes regarding Yorkshire County Cricket Club.  It was decided that he was always a keen supporter of furthering young cricketer’s careers, following the academy teams alongside the First and Second XI team.

Marjorie and Kevin’s generosity has enabled the inauguration of the Kevin C Armitage Scholarship, which will enable a young cricketer to travel abroad during the winter months to further their training.

The first winner of this award is Ben Coad, a Yorkshire Academy player who has made debuts in the First XI and Second XI this season.  He will be travelling to Australia in January and will have the opportunity to play with several teams across the country.

Ben was very grateful to be the first recipient of the Armitage Scholarship and is looking forward to the opportunity of developing his cricket over the winter months.  He hopes the scholarship continues to grow in stature and is sure it will become something to be achieved amongst all young cricketers at Yorkshire.

Yorkshire’s First XI coach, Jason Gillespie joined Ben and Ian Dews, Director of Development for the grand unvelieing.  He said: “It will afford wonderful learning opportunities for developing Yorkshire Cricketers.

He added: “The Kevin Armatage Scholarship is a fantastic initiative in the memory of a dedicated Yorkshire supporter.  With the assistance of this scholarship we hope that we can add some names to the list of Yorkshire and England cricketers in the future.”

It is hoped that the scholarship will grow over the years and will become a competitive challenge for the young players.  See the top left hand corner for more photographs of the event.
