Former Yorkshire off-spinner Richard Wilkinson, pictured, created havoc with his old squad when he took 6-55 as Barnsley beat the Academy by two wickets in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.
Hosts Barnsley won the toss, and Oliver Hannon-Dalby made quick inroads: he trapped George Ross lbw in the opening over, and in his seventh over he clean bowled the other opener, Alex Lees. Jack Leaning and Jonathan Tattersall pulled things round with a stand of 30, but it was not enough as Wilkinson caused many problems for the middle-order, which once more failed to take control.
Only Tattersall and Henry Chadwick batted with confidence, and their stand of 57 was the only one of note. As has happened throughout the season the middle-order did not perform well. The openers were dismissed quickly, and the Academy had no total to build on. From 96-7 thanks to Chadwick and Tattersall they progressed to 166-9, preventing Barnsley from taking all eight points. Would it be enough?
Matthew Wilson and Simon Widdup opened up for Barnsley with 36 as the Academy
pace attack failed to make the much-needed early breakthrough. The introduction of spin saw left-armer Leyshon bowl Widdup, and then Tattersall’s leg-spin accounted for Wilson – whose 66 contained eight fours and a six.
Tattersall had Nuttall caught by the diving Lees at first slip, and Ross bowled Barnsley captain Jason Booth for 15. Leyshon sent back Wilkinson, thanks to David Girling’s superb diving catch at long-off, and with Barnsley at 150-6 one began to wonder if the Academy could win.
Leyshon’s third victim was wicket-keeper Luke Bullingham, stumped by Chadwick, but Ben O’Brien stood firm with 12 needed for victory in three overs. Hannon-Dalby went to a silly run-out, but a huge six by O’Brien over mid-wicket eased Barnsley’s furrowed brows, and victory was gained with two balls to spare.
The Academy spinners could be pleased with their performance, but 10 or more runs could have seen the Academy to victory. Barnsley were indebted to spinner Wilkinson and opening batsman Wilson.
