Joe Sayers carries his bat with Yorkshire on rack

— 23 June 2011

Rain played havoc with the Second Eleven Championship match at Darlington, when Yorkshire and Durham continued their joust. There was one break on Day 1 which wiped out 35 overs, three breaks on Day 2 which cost 60 overs, and Day 3 was washed out. The elements saved Yorkshire from total ignominy.

Yorkshire’s first innings of 91 was their lowest against their northern neighbours in 28 Championship matches, the worst sort of record to break – but there was one bright spot: a stalwart 56 not out from Joe Sayers, which saw him become only the third to carry his bat through a Yorkshire innings. No other batsmen got into double figures!

The best bowler? Chris Rushworth, fall guy of the Trophy match the previous day, who finished with five wickets for a mere 20 runs. What a difference a day makes!

Some things do not change. Ben Harmison carried his good form forward and got nearer the century mark than in his previous innings – he was top-scorer yet again for Durham when they set about passing Yorkshire’s first innings. It was not too difficult a task, but they lost four wickets before they took the lead.

Durham were 157 ahead with nine wickets down when the third rain break in their innings came. It was expected that the declaration would come, but it did not. Only one ball was needed on the resumption for the innings to be brought to an end – David Wainwright, the best of Yorkshire’s attack, catching Ruel Brathwaite off his own bowling to finish with 4-43.

Yorkshire had faced only two overs in their second innings when a torrential downpour accompanied by two flashes of lightning, puddles on the outfield, overflowing gutters and an early end to Day 2. The rain continued into the evening, and through the night.

It was still raining on the third morning, though not as copiously as the evening before. The umpires had not hesitation in abandoning play for the day, the match concluding as a draw.
