Callum Geldart, pictured, had a difficult two days when he captained Yorkshire Academy in their “friendly” match against the Red Rose rivals. Lancashire Academy bowled and batted better than Yorkshire after a stoppage for rain on Day 1, and finally won a one-innings encounter by six wickets.
Geldart won the toss and decided to bat, but with 19 runs on the board he was caught behind off opening bowler Connelly. George Ross and Jack Leaning got stuck into a partnership of 72, but the introduction of spinner Mohammed Abid saw wicket-keeper Gowers claim another victim.
Jack Hargreaves and Leaning put on 49, but Abid struck again, taking a return catch from Hargreaves. Abid added the wicket of James Stuart, 21, and Matt McKiernan had Eddie Wilson caught by Hardman. Wicket-keeper Dan Hodgson made a cautious start, but he was still there when Yorkshire closed Day 1 on 218-8, and he and Ben Coad pushed Yorkshire to a total of 243 next morning. The two Lancashire spinners, Abid and McKiernan, picked up four wickets each and bowled 52 of the 89 overs.
Lancashire openers Ross Zelem and Liam Jackson made a cautious start of two an over, but at 40 Curtis Free had Jackson caught behind by Hodgson. Yorkshire did not enjoy another success until 68 runs later when left-arm spinner Ben Elvidge bagged Robert Zelem for 44.
Liam Livingstone came to the crease, and the scoring rate quickened: he hit 77 off 97 balls before he was clean bowled by Jack Holt, a forceful innings that changed the game. Livingstone had excellent support from left-hander Jack Tolley – who hit 12 fours in an excellent 86 not out.
Holt with 2-40 was the best of the quicker bowlers. Hodgson performed well behind the stumps, but the Yorkshire spin attack was overshadowed by Abid and McKiernan.
